Overview

How can you beautifully enhance an existing room or create a whole new look with quilts -- and make some extraordinary designs yourself? With decorating advice and stunning projects gathered by Country Living magazine, here is your source for the best in American quilt design. Color is one of the most fascinating and enjoyable aspects of quilting, from redwork embroidery on white linen to single-color stars on dark fabric. To get a contemporary chic look, the key is to decide on the most important decorative feature in your room, such as a red and white quilt, and make sure that nothing else is allowed to dominate it. If you prefer 1950s style, remember that having lots of retro-floral patterns can make a room look busy. Counteract this by placing a throw over the foot of your bed in a solid color that's also found in your quilt fabrics. Which project should you make? Try Butterflies at the Crossroads with its strong hues on a cream background to bring a comforting homey feel to a bedroom. Or choose Blue and White Checkerboard for a country setting.

Draw from a rich legacy of patterns to suit many different schemes. Log Cabin, for example, allows you to create complex motifs from tiny scraps by altering the positioning of light and dark fabrics. Here you'll learn how to stitch 9-Patch, one of the simplest of all patchwork patterns; Tumbling Blocks, a design with a three-dimensional effect that looks fabulous as a crib quilt; and Grandmother's Fan, the perfect project for a feminine bedroom; among others. There are two ways you can create texture: through your fabrics and through the quilting techniques you use. To set a rustic atmosphere, look for accessories with a homespun feel that encourage you to touch them, such as a cushion with alternating squares of openweave cotton, tied with thick strands of cotton or yarn. Among the projects you can complete is Grandmother's Flower Garden, which is based on hexagons. Simple outline quilting of each hexagon is enough to give the necessary depth and texture to the design. Bonus: Quilting guidelines that can add years to your quilt's life.
