Though it's true that Martina McBride's first hit single didn't happen until her second album, when the general public heard her version of Gretchen Peters' "Independence Day," then witnessed its powerful Robert Frank-esque video, there was no turning back; she became a superstar and remains one. This ten-track volume in Sony BMG's Country series covers some of her RCA hits without being comprehensive. That said, there isn't anything here that doesn't belong. This ten-track volume in Sony BMG's Country series covers some of her RCA hits without being comprehensive. That said, there isn't anything here that doesn't belong. Whether it's anthems like the aforementioned cut, "Wild Angels," or "This One's for the Girls," ballads such as "Wrong Again," or honky tonkers like "A Broken Wing," McBride's delivery and gift for getting at the very heart of a lyric are singular. Combine those qualities with her range and power, and she's in a class by herself. While fans have everything here, either on the original albums or other compilations, given the price tag, this is a fine introduction to the one of the few iconic singers that the neo-traditionalist and/or contemporary eras have produced.
