Country: Patty Loveless

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
It seems that Sony BMG's Country series is designed to provide a well-rounded introduction to noteworthy artists from the genre who've had not merely successful careers, but exemplary ones. Patty Loveless is one of the latter. Her recordings for both Universal and Sony offer the very best of the best of new traditionalist contemporary country music. The ten tracks here are meant to provide a solid introduction, though it certainly doesn't go deep enough -- currently, there isn't a compilation on the market that does, given that she experienced equal success with both major labels and cross-licensing is still not commonplace enough in the industry. That said, given the nature of this artist, what is here is all gold, whether it be the big smashes like "Blame It On Your Heart," "You Don't Seem to Miss Me," Halfway Down," or "I Try to Think About Elvis," or equally fine but lesser-known cuts like the wonderful "Trouble with the Truth," "Nothin But the Wheel," "High On Love," or "You Don't Even Know Who I Am." Loveless, whose career with the majors has fallen by the wayside due to her own unwillingness to compromise on quality, has recorded some of her best work for independents and remains one of the greatest country singers and stylists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This introduction, even with its omissions, is so consistent, that it can't help but make any sincerely curious listener delve deeper into a truly fine catalog. Given the price point, this is an irresistible purchase.
