Country Songs for City Folk/Memphis Beat

All Music Guide - Bruce Eder
A really cool pairing of two relatively obscure and always overlooked early- to mid-'60s LPs by Jerry Lee Lewis that, respectively, capture him as a country crooner and quite a good one and a high-energy country-rocker with a bluesy edge. The original albums never sold any significant numbers to speak of, with the result that the material will essentially be new to all but the most hardcore fans. None of it is bad and a large portion of it is not only good but impressive, showing some sides to Lewis' talent that weren't always obvious amid the rippling ivories of the Sun Records hits. What's more, the harder stuff on this CD slots right in as direct evolutionary successors ...

What's more, the harder stuff on this CD slots right in as direct evolutionary successors to those Sun sides as well as repeating and improving upon one or two of the latter, so even the most conservative of Lewis' fans will find quite a bit to love about this CD. The annotation is also extremely thorough, and between that and the fact that the 2005-vintage digital transfer runs circles around the old vinyl copies the pressings of which were mostly pretty poor, there are about 27 compelling reasons counting the 24 songs for owning this CD.
