Country's 20 Classic Gospel: Songs of the Century

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
In 2004, with a parade of sound-alike artists performing forgettable material, both contemporary country and Christian music are in a creative lull. In 2004, with a parade of sound-alike artists performing forgettable material, both contemporary country and Christian music are in a creative lull. Nothing makes that point better than the stellar Country's 20 Classic Gospel Songs of the Century, which brings together the most heart-wrenching, passionate performances either genre of music has seen in years. The fruit of a partnership between the Country Music Hall of Fame and New Haven Records, Classic Gospel picks the best country gospel performances, as chosen by broadcasters and Hall of Fame experts. Contemporary treasures such as Vince Gill's Grammy-winning "Go Rest High on That Mountain" and the crystalline harmonies of trio Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt on "Farther Along" join gems such as the Carter Family's landmark "Can the Circle Be Unbroken," Elvis Presley's "In the Garden," and Johnny Cash's folksy take on the African-American spiritual "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord." The choice performances resonate with emotion, as clear today as when they were first recorded.
All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
This is one of the better collections of country gospel out there, and it favors classic country artists as well. While Alison Krauss and the Cox Family open it with "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow," other than Vince Gill there are no currently charting Nash Vegas acts in the set. And yes, that is a good thing. Instead, listeners get Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt singing "Farther Along," Tammy Wynette offering "Precious Memories," Johnny Cash's "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?," and tracks from Willie Nelson "Uncloudy Day", a medley from Merle Haggard, and many more. The remastered sound is beautiful, and to hear Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, the Stanley Brothers, Ferlin Husky, Red Foley, Hank Williams, the Carters, Ricky Skaggs, Elvis Presley, and Connie Smith on one set, all singing the greatest tunes in the country gospel canon for a budget price, is almost too good to be true.
