Overview

Love takes work, but, when it comes to relationships, it pays to work smarter. Couple Skills, Second Edition, revised and updated from the therapist-recommended classic, will show you how to work smarter in your relationship. You'll learn to improve communication, cope better with problems, and resolve conflicts with the one you love in healthy and creative ways. Each chapter teaches you an essential skill that supports greater relationship satisfaction and deeper intimacy.

New to this edition is a chapter on using acceptance skills, developed from the revolutionary new acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). These new approaches will help you to accept your partner's feelings (and your own emotions) without judgment. Using these techniques will help you decide what you really value in your relationship and then commit to acting in ways that further those values every day.

A very thorough and easy-to-use guide. After just the first few chapters, my partner and I were already communicating much more cleanly and breaking some negative patterns in our relationship. The book is set up so you can pick which chapters are relevant to your own situation, with short explanations of the topic at the beginning of each chapter, followed by a short explanation of the academic schools of thought behind it, and then the theory and application. There are easy-to-follow exercises with each of the chapters to help start you on the path to better skills with your partner. Take the time to read this book and listen to what it says and you'll be sure to create a healthier relationship with your partner.

I am about 30 pages from the end of this book and plan on reading it again as soon as I'm finished. This is not the type of self-help book that tells you to change your diet, take herbal pills, hold hands and pray. They actually give you thorough details on what steps to take to recognize and repair nearly every fight-causing problem in your relationship by helping you realize your anger triggers and calming them before they escalate into a war. This book is also filled with exercises, as well as examples of how to do them properly, which I intend to photocopy and start using as soon as I've finished my first pass with the book. Everyone that is in a relationship should read this book because it can help to fix problems, or make 'non-problems' even better just by learning to communicate more effectively, but I especially recommend this book to those who are in (what I refer to as) an explosive relationship.
