Overview

Examine the unique emotional challenges and issues that face couples of mixed HIV status today!Previous books on this subject mostly written in the days when HIV/AIDS was considered a fatal rather than a chronic disease focused on end-of-life issues. However, Couples of Mixed HIV Status: Clinical Issues and Interventions addresses the unique emotional challenges facing today’s couples of mixed HIV status and provides a conceptual framework for assessment and intervention. The book offers examples of how to apply emotionally focused couple therapy to help them work through issues including disclosure, the fear of HIV transmission, shifts in emotional intimacy, family planning, betrayal, mistrust, and uncertainty. This unique work, its knowledge base, and the interventions you'll find inside, are applicable to any pracitioner who provides couple and family therapy as well as any practitioner who counsels around issues of chronic illness. Couples of Mixed HIV Status provides therapists with a range of theoretical approaches to help mixed HIV status couples deal with their issues and concerns. It includes applications of couple therapy approaches that have proved to be particularly effective as well as case studies that demonstrate how different relationship variables may affect therapy. The book presents the findings of a research study involving 44 mixed HIV status couples in the Northeast and is generously illustrated with tables that make complex research results easy to access and understand. Topics covered in Couples of Mixed HIV Status include:
  • various approaches to couples therapy
  • the historical context of HIV/AIDS
  • HIV transmission
  • family planning and HIV/AIDS
  • emotionally focused couple therapy
  • disclosure issues
  • attachment theory
and much more!Couples of Mixed HIV Status: Clinical Issues and Interventions is a valuable resource for therapists and other mental health counselors working with today’s couples of mixed HIV status as well as for students of counseling and health related services. Readers who may be in a mixed HIV status relationship or those who are friends and family members of couples living with HIV will also find this book helpful.

What People Are Saying

Vincent J. Lynch PhD
Vincent J. Lynch, PhD, MSW, Founder and Chair, The Annual National Conference on Social Work and HIV/AIDS; Director of Continuing Education and Adjunct Associate Professor, Boston College Graduate School of Social Work, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts
A GOLDMINE. . . . Nancy Beckerman is, first and foremost, a gifted couples therapist. She is also someone with a wealth of knowledge and experience about the psychosocial challenges associated with clients impacted by HIV. For those negotiating the many complex emotional, medical, and sexual challenges of being in a mixed HIV status couple, she clearly describes several intervention frameworks for couples therapy, and then guides us as to which framework works best, under what circumstances, and why. Also of note is that the challenges described by the author are derived from evidence-based sources. The author provides many rich clinical vignettes and session transcripts that bring clients' concerns to life and help the clinician more fully understand how to best use one's 'therapeutic self.' A WINNER!

With this book, Dr. Beckerman has provided therapists with a greatly needed tool to assist in the counseling of couples of mixed HIV status. Her current research and application of theoretical models provides important guidance in addressing issues of high prevalence among these couples. Especially valuable is her consideration of these issues across the variables of race, gender, and sexual orientation. For many years those of us working in human services with HIV-positive persons have talked about 'living with AIDS.' In this book, Dr. Beckerman has provided clinicians with the tools to address this central issue in the emotional lives of persons living with AIDS and those whom they love and who love them.

Ridiculous price! What is this publisher thinking?

Okay, I expected (for $57) an actual book that I would at least use for my therapy practice. This little tiny paperback is thinner than what you buy in the grocery store and about the same size as a tween vampire novel, yet it is FIFTY. SEVEN. DOLLARS. And it is BORING! It is someone's thesis all repackaged with a 1980's Duran Duran cover minus the band photo (and as a former graphic designer, let me tell you--awful job on the design and boring layout). How is this justified? It is not by the quality of the material--it is full of boring stats (yes, we need some stats to back it up but this is just enough to kill any reader). I had to buy this book for a continuing ed class--and I had hoped it would at least be something I would use again. I don't see that happening, unless I need some material that would substitute for an Ambien. How disappointing!
