Courage Hist of U S Marshals

Courage Hist of U S Marshals

by Robin Langley Sommer

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
Sommer has written a short, noncritical history of the U.S. Marshals. Though the U.S. Marshals are mostly associated with the Wild West, they form the oldest law enforcement agency in the United States, having been founded in 1789. Sommer traces the agency's evolution from its role in the Whiskey Rebellion through the hostage protection program of the Eighties. Lavishly illustrated with over 100 photographs and historical illustrations, this work offers a brief history of a governmental agency that has on more than one occasion been accused of political patronage, corruption, and unprofessionalism. (For a more objective and comprehensive history see Frederick S. Calhoun's The Lawmen , Smithsonian, 1989). For libraries having little on the U.S. Marshals and for high school libraries.-- Richard Nowicki, Emerson Vocational H.S., Buffalo, N.Y.
