My Review:
This book has a slightly different feel from book #1 in this series. Whereas book #1, Til Death Undo Us, had more of a suspense edge, this one felt more like a contemporary read to me, although there is definitely some danger involved in this one too....it's just a different sort.
*sigh* This book features Cay, a hot-shot fighter pilot lieutenant that we got to meet in book #1 (he's Cassidy's twin brother.) I love his character. He sees Candace and knows he wants her and that's all there is to it. She can't get him to leave her alone. I love his perseverance and that this guy has no fear to go after what he wants even though Candace has all sorts of personal issues going on that absolutely would scare most guys away.
And Candace does have a lot going on...a missing abusive husband, an 11 yo son, a belligerent father in law, a totaled car, a bad attitude, and an even worse reputation with her neighbors who loved her husband because they never saw the same man she did. There's no doubt she's had an incredibly bad year and her Irish/Scottish temper manages to get her into all sorts of trouble, but OMG, you have to love her feistiness. In the midst of all this, she continues to get up and fight back at the world that keeps trying to knock her down. Her resilience and love for her child is incredible. (I wanted to stand up and cheer when she shot the bird...you'll understand when you get to that point in the book...loved her!)
There's a lot to love about this book...Candace's 11 yo son, who has some great lines in this book and is so protective of Candace.
...Brennan, Cay's photographer brother...love his photo documentation.
...love the glimpses of Whitney-- maybe Brennan's future heroine??
I continue to love this series and look forward to book #3, Weathering the Storm, which I think comes out in September.
