Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Wars exact a toll on all participants. While combat soldiers experience the worst aspects of warfare, civilians also experience grave losses as well. In modern warfare increasing numbers of civilians, including children, are drawn directly into the pathway of war. Starting in World War II, civilians have become a strategic target in many aspects of combat. In such a world of total war, children are horribly impacted. In this segment of the illustrated "War Stories" series readers are given a taste of how war affects children. In this book readers will encounter Civil War drummer boys, Boer War buglers, Holocaust survivors, and children who are casualties of war. Perhaps one of the saddest aspects of this story is that of the boy soldiers who have been forced to fight in wars across the globe. In a world where children are directly victimized by combat it is important that their story be told. Jane Bingham has done a good job of presenting the effects and experiences of war on children. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
