Overview

Burned in a house fire a few days before losing his father, college student Shawn Carpenter has spent years working, caring for his family, and paying penance. When an acquaintance introduces him to God and invites him to a college youth group, the changes in his life are immense and unsettling. The most unsettling part is Jenny Clearwater, his boss's daughter. He can't deny his attraction, but she courts instead of dating, and courting seems all about keeping the Shawn Carpenters of the world away from the Jenny Clearwaters.

Danger and heartache seem to come around every bend, from a cave trip gone wrong to a friendship that goes up in flames to an accusal of crime at work. Seems God has put events in motion to lead Shawn back into a life of community and growth, assuming, of course, they don't kill him first.

Meet the Author

Jill Penrod got her writing degree years ago with top honors, writing a novel as her senior project instead of the short stories she'd been assigned, and she's been writing novels ever since.

Jill Penrod is a homeschool mom living in a suburb of the middle U.S. with a husband and an assortment of grown and nearly-grown children, most of whom don't know how to do their own dishes. She also lives with a bunch of cats, who are definitely the interesting ones in the family. The rest of the crew loves to watch the cat dramas.

Besides writing, she also teaches pottery and 3-D art. She is a Christian, and this shows in her books, whether explicitly inspirational or otherwise. Also, her love for teens, drama, adventure, romance, and fantasy shows up in her books, regardless of what age she's writing for.

This book had an okay overview, but when I started reading it, I lost interest immediately. The beginning didn't grab my attention, and the author proposed the problem way too soon without explaining what courtship was. It was like saying, "The problem is that she doesn't date. She courts people." "What is the difference?" "I don't know." I normally wouldn't criticize an author's work, but if you waste your money on this, you will be very unhappy. Please take this into account when you make your decision.

There is no God. Read or watch some Stephen Hawking. Evolution. Science. It all makes sense; there is no creation, or reincarnation.
