The first volume of Crumrin was more a collection of short stories about Courtney. The second installment was a single story. The book does a really swell job of keeping things shrouded in mystery, but still building the lore of the magical world Courtney lives in.
Courtney herself is a bit of a hard read. Harsh exterior with a kind heart? Possibly. She walks the fine line between lovable rapscallion and obnoxious brat, with only slight and brief stumbles. Those stumbles tend to change the feel of the book. What feels like an all ages book most of the time, may possibly upset the youngest of readers.
The world of Crumrin does feel vast and full of magic. Courtney herself is a unique character. She is similar to Kat Incorrigible, but with a punk edge.
