Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Noting that without free legal assistance for the poor equal justice is a myth, attorney Litwak ( Reel Power ) here celebrates dedicated, idealistic lawyers who defend the disadvantaged. Among them is a New Mexico champion of victims of child abuse and neglect and a female Harvard law school graduate who runs a legal clinic for Los Angeles skid-row squatters. Also vividly portrayed are criminal attorneys who defend guilty clients without compromising their own ethical standards. Litwak salutes especially consumer rights and public interest advocate Ralph Nader and his associates and former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Rudolph Giuliani. These courtroom crusaders, we're told, are ``the real thing,'' and as presented here few will quibble with the contention. Photos not seen by PW. (Nov.)
School Library Journal
YA-- Seven lawyers, each seeking to set new legal precedents, are presented in this fascinating account. The attorneys featured differ greatly as to the type of cases they handle and the locales in which they practice. They represent such diverse clientele as some skid-row homeless people to Ralph Nader; one specializes in product liability suits, another is defending an Athabascan Indian whose religious belief ran counter to the law in Alaska. These counsels are positive role models because of their vision and daring. Young adults, particularly those interested in the law as a career, will gain inspiration and find this book exciting. --Carolyn Henebry, Harris County Public Library, Houston
