Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Building on the earlier books in the Acorn early readers "Families" series, this title goes on to describe the children in families with aunts and uncles—girls and boys in the extended family ". . . are called cousins." Although the progression from the Parents book is obvious if you have the whole set, this book could easily stand alone as it discusses the make-up of families before it discusses cousinhood. The simple text is accompanied by colorful pictures that show a variety of different family possibilities with girls and boys as cousins in large families and smaller ones, as well. We are shown a wide sampling of ethnicities and a variety of settings, both indoors and outside. The families are seen sharing sidewalk adventures in the city, playing in the snow in the woods, camping out, walking on the beach, sharing games and meals—doing all of the things that families around the world enjoy. As with the other titles in the series, there is a table of contents, a brief "picture glossary," a brief index, and notes to parents and teachers with ideas for before and after reading strategies to make the book more meaningful. Fine for preschool read aloud or older, challenged readers. Rated level H with 145 words, this series also includes: Aunts and Uncles, Parents, Brothers and Sisters, Foster Parents, Grandparents, and Role Models. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
