Overview

In the tradition of Michael Crichton and James Rollins comes a fast-paced debut thriller featuring a missing archeologist, a fundamentalist preacher, and a mysterious tomb.

When archaeologist Lucy Morgan uncovers a 7000-year-old tomb on a dig in a remote part of Israel, she realizes she has stumbled across something important—something that means history will have to be entirely re-written. And she isn’t the only one who is curious about these remains…they seem to be non-human. That’s before she disappears.

Pastor Robert Paterson, head of one of America’s biggest fundamentalist churches, has known of such discoveries for some time, but in his eyes these skeletons are not aliens but Angels. He is determined to see God’s Angels resurrected on Earth with the help of his team of scientists.

Former war correspondent Eddie Warner has seen much action in the line of fire. He had hoped to lead a more quiet existence, but when Lucy’s family asks him to help find her, he can’t say no. After all, he too has someone missing out there—someone he once loved and for whom he would give his life.

Fresh, original, and an old-fashioned page-turner, Covenant is an exciting new addition to the world of thrillers.

Publishers Weekly
Sloppy prose undermines British author Crawford's debut thriller about an archeological find that challenges human history. At the behest of the Defense Intelligence Agency, American combat journalist Ethan Warner agrees to travel to Israel to track down missing paleontologist Lucy Morgan. Morgan stumbled on skeletal remains of an unknown species of a human-like creature, whose larger cranial capacity and greater physical strength suggest it didn't evolve on Earth. An unscrupulous right-wing preacher, Kelvin Patterson, who's hoping to land his chosen candidate in the White House, believes that Morgan found the remains of a fallen angel. Morgan's anxious mother accompanies Warner to Israel, where they visit the scene of Morgan's excavations, improbably overseen not by the Israeli military but by a Blackwater-type military contractor. At one point Warner finds himself "pinned between third and fourth base with the ball in the air." U.S. readers will also get a chuckle out of such lines as "your chances are about as good as the Redskins at the bottom of the ninth ‘gainst the Chargers." (Oct.)

Newly released today is Dean Crawford's debut novel Covenant. Archaeologist Lucy Morgan is on a sanctioned dig in Israel. But it is what she discovers on her own time nearby that is unbelievable. "The remains bore testimony to an enormously powerful creature, the internment a cavity over eight feet long....Ahmed looked at the bones, confused now by the unfamiliar terminology and the doctor's excitement. 'What's so special about it ?' A ghost of a smile touched Lucy's lips. "It's not human'." But before Lucy can share her discovery with the world, she is abducted. When her family is unable to get assistance from either the American or Israeli government, they turn to former marine and war correspondent Ethan Warner for help. As Warner and Lucy's mother Rachel search, they find a conspiracy deeper than anyone could have imagined - governments, church, military and many unsavoury individuals - all with their own agendas. Covenant's first five or six chapters introduce us to all the players - and there are quite a few. I did find I had to refer back to some of the opening chapters in order to keep everyone straight for the first bit. Protagonist Ethan Warner is an interesting character who is still fighting demons from his own past. I was glad to see that Crawford did not make him omnipotent - able to figure out every puzzle right away or fight his way out of every situation. It allowed him to be both believable and likable. But I think my favourite character was actually Lopez, one of the DC cops who stumble onto the collusion. I was glad to see she will be brought back along with Warner in the next book of this planned series. As for the plot - in some ways it seems a bit far fetched - a take on Area 51. But Crawford had me running to my computer many times to check out the science and historical references he makes in the book. And you know, they're out there and documented. Enough to really get you thinking and wondering. I thought it was an inventive, ambitious storyline. There are many twists and turns on the way to the final page. For those who love mysteries, history, conspiracies and adventure, Covenant has it all. Recommended for fans of James Rollins and Michael Crichton. On his blog, Dean Crawford describes himself as "A thriller writer with a good chance (I think) of success." I think so too Dean!

In the Negev in Israel, archaeologist Lucy Morgan works an unsanctioned dig in which she tells Bedouin guide Ahmed and University Professor Shevez that she has found remains that are seven millennia old but are not human. However, before they can make their claim to the authorities, she vanishes. Ex marine and former war correspondent Ethan Warner is known for finding and rescuing people in some of the most dangerous areas of the world. However, when his fiancée Joanna disappeared while working in Gaza, heartbroken he returned to the Chicago as a shell of what he was. However, his former superior officer Doug Jarvis asks him to rescue his missing granddaughter Lucy. The DIA also want Lucy found, but cannot interfere as the peace process has made some small progress recently. Ethan agrees to go to the Negev especially after being shown a photo that proves his Joanna lives. Washington, D.C Metro Detectives Nicola Lopez and Lucas Tyrell enter a building they assume has been used by crack heads. They find three naked corpses that FBI Agent Cain says are overdoses. Tyrell disagrees but what makes him certain is one of the victims has what appears to be frostbite on his feet in summer DC weather. Soon the DC investigation and the missing archeologist inquiry merge though they are miles apart. This taut thriller hooks readers from the moment Lucy tells her associate what she found and never looks back until a final confrontation. Fans will especially try to resolve the connection between the desert and the metro, which is not as obvious as it first seems. Filled with twists, readers will enjoy the Covenant wondering what Lucy's find really means to the world. Harriet Klausner

A beautiful tall and slender silver she wolf with bright blue eyes, silky fur, long, sharp teeth and claws. She smells humans, but there is some other scent around them as well. Her curiosity gets the better of her and she pads right into the middle of the group. (She's a very loyal wolf and is kind enough to help anyone or anything in need but mean enough that she will fight to kill if she has to. She needs an owner and can be tamed.)

A 18 year old girl enters. She is at least 6'3 and looks like a supermodel, with long caramel hair ending at her knees, pale skin, and slanted ice blue eyes. She wears a black lace cami and black jeggings with high heeled boots lacing up to her thighs. She is also wearing a black leather jacket. She wears on her pale wrist a black watch. She is carrying a tiny gray kitten with adorable green eyes. "Hello!" She says. Her voice is dark, low, yet high pitched, like tinted glass. "My name is Adele and this is Blood." She gestured to her kitten.
