    I Also Recommend:

An essential cookbook to every family's kitchen

Despite the previous reviewers' remarks, certainly not every recipe calls for a 9x13 pyrex dish - this cookbook does include delicious casseroles but also contains slow cooker recipes as well as my favorite chapter - One Dish Meals which are best completed in a dutch oven. You can easily use less meat for smaller families, freeze leftovers or use the directions to make ahead. The recipes vary in origin - some of my favorites are Moroccan or Indian stews or French 40 cloves of garlic chicken. This cookbook teaches classic cooking techniques using simple, fresh ingredients. Of course, the background information and research of each recipe which has come to define America's Test Kitchen is included - as well as the science behind cooking providing best particular kitchen utensil or cookware (example: brand of kitchen thongs, dutch oven, style of mandolin/v-slicer) brand canned tomatoes, grocery store olive oil etc. according to taste tests. This was my first Cook's Illustrated cookbook and continues to be my favorite.

Can't make it through the week without this book!

This is a great cookbook that has simplified my life sooooo much! Each dish (almost) is baked in a 9 x 13 pyrex dish (who doesn't have 3-4 of these lying around the house, just waiting for the next potluck?)though some small families (2-3 people) may find that this makes alot, but the recipes can easily be cut in half and are well worth the effort. I now cook about twice a week. Most of these dishes can be made up to 3 days ahead of time, or frozen, which really helps! This book has brought back the family dinner to my table!

    Portions too large

Good recipes, well organized as usually, great kitchen science info, however every single recipe is baked in a 9x13 casserole dish. It is just the 2 of us way too many leftovers :( It would have been helpful if some of the recipes gave tips on how to bake in much smaller casserole dishes.

    Very Good

My husband and kids are pretty picky eaters, and I like to try new recipes, but in the past when I've tried new recipes, they haven't gone over well with my kids and husband. However, everything I have made from this book, everyone has loved.
