Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Comic book illustrator Horn has been most associated with the Marvel brand while being featured in many other publications and media. He paints digitally, in a vividly lit hyperrealistic style. This panoramic retrospective of his work is not for the YA collection, a fact that the cover image from a Penthouse magazine project leaves nary a doubt of: a gamer's hands manipulate a console—eponymously labeled "horny"—superimposed over the groin of a disrobing centerfold model. Apart from some dramatically rendered superhero, alien, and cyborg material (Spiderman is among this cast), Horn's principal subjects are young women, specifically swimsuit model types. Many of these women are superheroes in uncommon ways: they are unfazed by too-small thongs, have the remarkable ability to fly with their knees apart, or stand unabashedly in provocative contrapposto despite what must be very uncomfortable wedgies. Most of the content here displays examples of some of Horn's best-known characters, for example, Ms. Marvel, Emma Frost, and the She-Hulk. VERDICT Every inch of every page is saturated with Horn's colorful and dynamic images, the idealized female forms undeviating to the point of banality. A thorough retrospective survey of one of the prime illustrators in the comics industry, this book will appeal to those of the demimonde—especially male.—Douglas F. Smith, Berkeley P.L., CA
