Overview

Nothing interesting ever happens at the center. Everything interesting is out at the edges. Sparks kick up when opposing edges meet. Sometimes hot edges fuse, creating something wild and new--the birth of a hopeful monster. That's cover culture.

New
1993 Trade Paperback 1st Edition, 1st Printing New 216 pages, slightly oversize quality trade paperback, includes a lot of pictures and an Index. "A Guide to Fringe Culture: ... books, catalogs, music, video, technology, fashion, tools for living". True 1st: no hardcover edition of this was published. New, unread copy: I bought it new in 1993, never read it, stored it carefully over the years. The result: it's perfect. It has NO markings throughout, NOT an ex-library, NOT a book club, NOT a remainder. Fine. Read more Show Less

Editorial Reviews

Gordon Flagg
St. Martin's is touting this guide as ""Mondo 2000" meets the "Whole Earth Catalog""--not a bad characterization of a volume that crosses the "WEC"'s "Access to Tools" utility with "Mondo"'s cutting-edge approach. It's a selective but aware compilation of the new "alternative" media: books (from cyberpunk fiction to the "Psychedelics Encyclopedia"), zines (from "Future Sex" to "Women & Guns" plus a scattering of on-line zines on computer bulletin board systems), music (of the "indy," "new," and "world" varieties), video (from underground films to noncommercial documentaries), and (playing up the Whole Earth connection) "Tools for Living," including resources on tattooing, guides to sex toys and smart drugs, and bizarre software and wearable computers. Although some of the entries aren't as "out there" as they might be (many of the books and CDs are from mainstream publishers and labels, available even in mall stores), many others usefully introduce examples of personal creativity made possible by PCs, photocopiers, camcorders, and digital samplers. It's impossible to imagine that any interested reader won't want to track down something from this collection, and Kadrey lists mail-order resources to make that easier.
From Barnes & Noble
Proving that the most interesting things occur outside the mainstream, this guidebook to alternative-culture provides sources for books, catalogs, magazines, music, video, technology, fashion, fan clubs, etc.--all at the "edges" of center. Shop for hard-to-get tech-ware and cult films; read reviews of cyberpunk literature; more!
