Wilson's (Bear Snores On) rhymed cumulative poem introduces children to the kinds of food farm animals eat. "When-ever Farmer feeds the horse,/ he feeds the horsey hay, of course." Each stanza ends by emphasizing that, "the cow loves cookies," and portrays the cow stealing cookies from a round-faced baby or pilfering cookies from a cookie jar (while wearing a rather guilty expression). Hall's (City I Love) watercolor illustrations, lined in thick, black ink, feature an old-fashioned, idyllic farm with a white-bearded farmer, cookies the size of pancakes, and a gaggle of hungry animals. "So why does the cow love cookies?" Because the cow and farmer have made a deal--every day they have a picnic lunch, and "when the two sit down to munch,/ he takes cookies from a tin/ and Cow gives milk to dunk them in." While some parents may object to a book that encourages making cookies one's primary food group, children will identify with the blissful look of the farmer and his cow who "both love milk and cookies!" Many school lunchrooms no longer serve sweet desserts, and even Sesame Street's longtime resident Cookie Monster has cut back on the sugary goodies. Not so, for Wilson's new hero! This cow, as the title proclaims, "loves cookies"—and, boy, is she ever allowed to indulge! While the farmer feeds his other animals appropriate meals (hay for the horse, chicken feed for the chickens, cracked corn for the geese, slop for the pigs, and so on), he lets the cow eat only cookies. Why? Because he loves them, too. Farmer and cow, Wilson explains, have "a deal." Every day, the farmer provides the cookies, and the cow provides the milk so together they can enjoy a yummy meal. Parents who struggle to get healthy foods into their children may be turned off by this cookie-centric story, and they'll be missing out. Wilson's tale is all in good fun, not intended to be realistic or prescriptive in nature. " In a twist, readers are reminded after each animal's feeding, "But the cow loves cookies." As the cumulative story progresses, what each creature eats is repeated in successive fashion. "The geese munch corn; it tastes so fine./The hogs think slop is just divine./The dog adores his doggy treats./But Cow would rather eat things sweet…." The story ends with Farmer and Cow sharing cookies and milk. The cleverly rhyming text and pace of the story make it perfect for a read-aloud.     Your preschoolers next favorite book!

    You might get a little craving for cookies and milk after reading this book. It's full of short and simple text with big, bright and colorful illustrations. But what I loved most about this book was the reason why the cow loves cookies. The book describes what happens on a typical farm day. The horse eats hay, the chickens eat chicken feed, the geese eat sweet corn, the hogs eat slop, the dogs eat dog treats but, "the cow would rather eat things sweet." The farmer and cow eat lunch with each other everyday. Together that have worked out a plan to share their food. One brings the cookies while the other provides the milk.

    Wonderful to read over and over!

    My children love this book and the adults don't mind reading this one again and again! So cute.
