Overview

Yesiree! A bright new bedtime book illustrated by the creator of the award-winning COWBOY BABY.

Cowboy Kid loves Texas Ted, Denver Dog, and Hank the Horse with all his heart. Yes sirree! Before Sheriff Pa tucks him in, Cowboy Kid gives each toy a great big hug and a sleep-tight kiss. Now he's ready for bed. Or is he? Nosirree! Cowboy Kid reckons his friends might fancy just one more kiss, or a special blanket to keep them warm, or . . . one more kiss. Making sure everyone gets their fill of affection tuckers him out, but Cowboy Kid can't seem to round up any shut-eye, not until Sheriff Pa gathers him up in his arms with a wonderful secret.

Filled with familiar feelings and bold, simple illustrations, this bright bedtime tale reassures restless cowpokes—and exasperated parents—that sleepytime is just over the horizon.

A young boy has difficulty getting to sleep because his toys seem to need so many hugs and kisses at bedtime.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Cowboy Kid climbed into bed with his three favorite toys--Texas Ted, Denver Dog and Hank the Horse. Sheriff Pa gave him a kiss and tucked him in. "Off you go to sleep now," said Sheriff Pa. But Cowboy Kid couldn't go to sleep yet. He thought everyone would like to be a little warmer, sleep a little closer, and was in need of another hug and kiss. Sheriff Pa returned with sound advice. Yes sirree! The familiar theme of bedtime procrastination is given a new twist with Cowboy Kid's tender concern for his favorite toys. The oh-so-delightful facial expressions of the three stuffed animals and the varying perspectives of Cowboy Kid's bed and bedroom absorb the reader in the book. Eye-catching warm-toned colors in acrylics give a sense of the time of day. It is further enhanced by the soft circle of light, as from a lamp or flashlight, enveloping the little boy's nighttime world. Heap's Cowboy Baby, now a little older, and his father return in their second story, a gentle and tender bedtime tale. 2000, Candlewick Press, Ages 3 to 6, $15.99. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
School Library Journal
PreS-K-Heap's Cowboy Baby (Candlewick, 1998) is now older but is still giving Sheriff Pa a hard time about going to bed. This time his animal friends Texas Ted, Denver Dog, and Hank the Horse need that "one more" kiss and hug good night, ad infinitum, making it difficult for the boy to fall asleep. But, sure enough, Pa comes to the rescue with a solution. This book is slightly smaller in size than the first, but Heap's illustrations are just as colorful and bright and the Cowboy Kid (with hair now) is just as appealing. An excellent bedtime offering for young cowhands, "YES SIREE!"-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

Meet the Author

Max Eilenberg says that COWBOY KID is based on his own childhood. "I used to spend hours each night kissing my many toys good night, making sure that no one was left out. It was a logistical and mathematical nightmare. But one night, my mother left a note on my pillow, apparently written by my toys, asking me not to kiss them quite so often as they were getting all worn out!"

Sue Heap, the author and illustrator of COWBOY BABY, says illustrating COWBOY KID was both a challenge and a pleasure for her. "I had to draw COWBOY BABY (now COWBOY KID) as an older child—and try to keep him in one place long enough for him to get to sleep."
