Although coyotes and badgers usually hunt alone, author Bruce Hiscock once saw a coyote and a badger catch a rabbit together in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. Their partnership is legendary to Native Americans, but few other people have ever seen them hunting together. Hiscock illustrates this natural history story with realistic watercolor paintings, capturing the scorching days and starry nights around the Anasazi pueblo ruins. 2001, Boyds Mills Press, $15.95. One dry spring in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, hungry Coyote searches for food. Badger is also hunting to feed herself and her two pups. The usual night-hunting digger and the fast-running predator form a strange partnership, working together with the talents each has to catch enough food for survival. Badger loses one pup and leaves; Coyote hunts on alone. Finally the summer rains come; there will be food enough for all. The reality of the struggle for life in the harsh desert is softened by the almost human relationship of the animals. Naturalistic pictures of the desert, as well as several cross-sections showing Badger's tunnels, set the scene. Some Anasazi ruins and a few scattered artifacts add a bit of ancient mystery to the immediacy of the life and death narrative. Gr 1-4-Hiscock's fictionalized portrait of animals desperate for food reveals the instinctive predatory nature of a coyote and the patient skill of a badger; the two creatures form a bond and hunt together in Chaco Canyon, NM. The narrative encompasses dangers from the ground to the sky, a thorough picture of the environment, and the suddenness of death there. Teamwork between coyotes and badgers is explained in an author's note that outlines historical and scientific basis for their relationship. Hiscock's full-page illustrations in a pastel palette reflect the warmth of the Southwestern sun. The unspoken presence of humans in the desert echoes on each page with the appearance of small petroglyphs and buried Indian artifacts.
