Overview

Is that crab driving a cab? Will the pot stay hot? Flip a page and watch a crab turn into a dab! Crab Cab features these word families: -ab, -ot, -it Nouns or verbs from a word family are shown. Single words progress into short phrases ("hot spot") and then simple sentences. A die-cut at the bottom of the page encourages kids to turn - and see a new word from the same family, along with a new image (a b-un becomes a s-un). With playful, colorful art done in the "Hello Kitty" style, each book in this interactive phonics series features three different word families. Word families help children recognize similarities between words that rhyme and connect words with matching long, or short, vowel sounds. Kids can then read words that they haven't seen before. Flip-a-Word takes kids from a single word, to a phrase, to a simple sentence. From there, eye-catching illustrations will lead kids to imagine story scenarios only a child could dream up! Kids, parents, teachers - everyone flips for Flip-a-Word!

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—Learning about word families has never been more fun. Using playful language, this early reader introduces three simple stories using the word families "ot," "ab," and "it." For example, "Snot" becomes "tot," "hot," "pot," "hot pot," "snot pot," "hot tot," and "pot on tot." Whimsical cutouts create new words by turning the page, and modern, edgy designs engage youngsters. This illustrator grabs the text and punctuates it with bold animelike characters that are sure to delight the beginning-to-read set, particularly kinetic learners.—Melissa Smith, Green Valley Library, Henderson, NV
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In this offering new readers meet the "ot" "ab" and "it" families. The book presents words that contain these characters such as "snot" and "tot." The pictures are large cartoon style characters often with cutouts that pick up elements from previous pages. They do offer humor, but some is a bit on the gross side. For the "ab" family words like "crab," "blab," and "cab" are introduced. Like the previous sections, the words are combined into a silly phrase "crab in a cab." For the "it" family there are words such as "mitt," "hit," and "knit." I am not sure how many of today's kids will encounter knitters, but the closing pages feature a knitted mitt and scarf. The words are all recapped on a closing page. The gimmick of the cut out is not that effective in the "flip-a Word" book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
