Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Science Crackers" series, these colorful and informative books give an accurate and entertaining introduction to several science disciplines, as well as providing hands-on experiments. In this particular book, Parker starts with a discussion of matter: "What are these pages made of? Paper, of course. Paper is thin, light, flexible, and good for printing words and pictures. Paper is the right material or substance for the job. Imagine if these pages were made of bricks! There are hundreds of different materials and substances all around you. Each one...has certain features." Moving from the familiar to the unfamiliar, Parker discusses different materials the reader would know, then whether they are natural or not, or a combination. He then addresses what happens when the matter changes form by freezing, melting or boiling, as well as a section on chemical reactions. Experiments include building towers with paper tubes to show the strength of the tube, removing salt from sand, baking soda and vinegar, and more. Backmatter includes a glossary, index and short list of further information. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
