Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
From pompom aliens to eggplant penguins, this volume of the "Super Skills" series focuses on mastering skills kids can use to make decorative objects. Starting with basics (planning, gathering supplies like paint, scissors, and glue), big pages feature close-up photos displaying results, while clear, colorful drawings demonstrate techniques. Paper projects include making beads or cards and—more complicated—creating handmade paper (kids are warned to be careful with blenders). Folding origami animals and making papier-mache are techniques well-known to art teachers and parents who do craft work with kids; their help may be needed to produce, for example, the gilded and feathered masks pictured. Most of the other crafts require some manual dexterity and practice—also work space—but could be done in after-school classes or at home with an adult handy to answer questions. Especially fun are colorful alien creatures made from yarn pompoms and completed with supplies like buttons, paper clips or bottle caps. Puppets can lead to plays and stories—Turnbull introduces sock puppets and a grinning crocodile made from an egg carton. Since items like pinecones and seedpods are free, parents and teachers will appreciate ideas for nature crafts such as painted stone magnets and dried flowers, using materials collected in advance. While most of the careers Trumbull explores require special training aside from an inclination to make things, clothing designers, printmakers, and Claymation creators might well have started with a childhood attraction to crafts. Teachers will find craft projects useful for objectives involving manual skills, art appreciation, problem solving, and creative thinking; parents can help with encouragement, providing materials, tools, and classroom aid. A glossary and a list of websites especially for young artisans will help aspiring designers on their way. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
