Children's Literature
Little children are eager to learn and get very excited when their learning comes from making something by themselves. These crafts are simple enough to be made with little adult supervision. Each craft supports a Christian thought and incorporates a Bible verse. The craft activities will be particularly useful in home schooling, daycare centers and private schools. Crafts can support the positive values listed, with less emphasis on the Bible verses, if desired. Activities include a loving heart beanbag, a thoughts box, a helpful hand magnet and a gratitude jar. Examples of supplies needed are glue, construction paper, stapler, dry beans, markers and sticky bows. This would make a great gift for a grandchild and a grandparent to share. 2000, Millbrook Press, $24.90 and $7.95. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer: Joyce Rice

K-Gr 4-Twenty-eight clever and original designs illustrate a variety of Christian qualities. A loving heart beanbag, a bank for generous giving to missions, a bookmark to honor parents, a mealtime blessing book, a jar to fill with gratitude notes, and a mustard-seed necklace to encourage faith in God are among the crafts included. Each one has an appropriate Scripture quotation to reinforce its stated purpose. Cleanliness, perseverance, self-respect, thankfulness, compassion, empathy, courage, and patience are among the other virtues represented. The necessary materials include readily available items such as yarn, old socks, white glue, pipe cleaners, wiggly eyes, sticky notes, cans and jars, macaroni craft letters, poster paints, etc. The simply written, step-by-step directions are divided into "you need" and "what you do." Each project is clearly illustrated with cheerful ink-and-watercolor cartoon-style pictures. The type is well spaced, the format crisp and attractive. (Unfortunately, "psalm" is misspelled on one page.) Church-school teachers and parents will find these craft ideas useful and fun to create.-Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
