Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Drawing on her extensive experience as a teacher and nursery school program director, Kathy Ross has compiled a step-by-step collection of crafts, each derived from a children's book. Directions are clear, simple and in most cases, limited to one page. Materials are easy to find and include cardboard, colored paper, yarn, paper cups, aluminum foil, colored pencils, glue and masking tape. Many of the crafts involve the use of scissors, stapler and one-hole punch, although there is never a word of caution to children about using these tools. In a few cases, dimensions are not given for paper to cut and many projects require free-hand drawing to complete. Children may be frustrated when their completed craft does not resemble the artist's illustration. While some of the projects, like Peter Rabbit in a watering can and the runaway Gingerbread Boy are clever, others like the sock puppet wolf or the Little Engine That Could-toy seem neither clever nor useful. In the hands of a skilled adult this book may prove useful, and a creative teacher could use some of the projects for starters for their own imaginative creations. In the book's defense, the design and layout, with delightful border illustrations, is eye catching. 2001, Millbrook Press, $24.40 and $8.95. Ages 8 up. Reviewer:Beverley Fahey

Gr 1-4-Children will like these 20 imaginative projects, but anyone younger than nine will probably need help to assemble some of them. Each one is covered in a two-page spread, with a materials list followed by a numbered list of steps. The directions are clear and well illustrated with cartoon like watercolor art. Safety warnings about using sharp implements are not included. The "Bear Hug Puppet" for Marjorie Flack's Ask Mr. Bear uses party blowers for arms; Paul Bunyan's griddle is greased with the aid of a magnet-controlled Sourdough Sam; Doro- thy's house spins to Oz on a twisted string. As a supplement to storytelling or for hands-on crafts activities, this book is a good companion to Ross's Crafts from Your Favorite Fairy Tales (Millbrook, 1997), which uses the same format but different stories.-Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
