Editorial Reviews

Turn ordinary household items into decorative badges for a shirt, gift tags, or surprise presents for a friend with the help of this well-illustrated book. The necessary equipment is noted in the text and shown in photographs for easy identification. Step-by-step instructions for twenty four crafts are included. Be careful, though—some of the badges will look almost good enough to eat! Part of the "Crafty Kids" series. 2000, Gareth Stevens Publishing, $16.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: D. Detailed lists and directions will guide children through the process of making a variety of badges (decorative pins). The lists of material and tools needed are thorough, but unless you live in a moderately crafty home or are using this book in school, you may need to purchase quite a few of the materials (not all readily available unless you live in a larger city) before you can begin. These pins, while mostly simple to make, range from adorable to weird and do require some patience in their construction to allow for drying times and some as much precision work as the artist desires. Aspiring jewelry makers may be inspired. The author suggests that the badges may be used for fun decorations for clothing, hats and bags, or as gifts for family and friends. A bonus of this book is that some of the techniques used can be applied to other artistic ventures, such as making salt dough, papier-mâché and stitching. A glossary, additional resources, and index are included. Part of the "Crafty Kids" series. 2000, Gareth Stevens, $22.60. Ages 7 to 12. Reviewer: Trina Heidt
