Part of the "Crafty Kids" series, this entry offers instructions for making a variety of masks. The masks can be part of a costume for Halloween, a theater production, Mardi Gras or just for fun. The introduction contains a brief discussion of masks and how they have been used in various cultures. The table of contents lists two dozen masks (enough variety for most classrooms). Several pages are devoted to a description of the materials and equipment that will be needed to construct the masks, including a page of instructions for creating papier-mâché shapes and basic techniques for cutting eye holes, mouths and attaching ties or straps. For each of the projects there is a list of the supplies and equipment that will be needed. The instructions are clear and illustrated by kids actually carrying out the step. While the instructions are not specific enough for those with no craft experience, kids should be fine on their own after one or two projects. Among the more unusual masks are the polar bear, Egyptian mummy and sunshine. At the end of the book there is a glossary, list of additional mask and face painting books (no publication dates are given), a list of videos and web sites. There is an index and the page borders reflect the theme of each project. The author provides concrete instructions but also encourages kids to experiment and try variations of their own.
