Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Part of the "Crafty Kids" series, this entry offers instructions for making two dozen puppets. There is quite a variety--finger puppets, glove puppets, puppets made by painting hands and even foot puppets. Once made, kids can let their imaginations take over. They can stage their own stories, make a puppet theater and perform for friends and family. The materials required are not unusual and should be available from any craft or art supply store. Several pages are devoted to a description of the materials and equipment that will be needed to construct the puppets and the stages (traditional puppet theater, forest theater, South American bus and a sailboat) and also how to use them. For each of the projects there is a list of the supplies and equipment that will be needed. The instructions are clear and illustrated by kids actually carrying out the step. While the instructions are not specific enough for those with no craft experience, kids should be fine on their own after one or two projects. Among my favorites are the painted stag and the big beaky bird. At the end of the book there is a glossary, list of additional books (no publication dates are given), list of videos and web sites. There is an index and the page borders reflect the theme of each project. The author provides concrete instructions but also encourages kids to experiment and try variations of their own. A useful book in a well-done series. 2000 (orig. 1996), Gareth Stevens, Ages 8 to 12, $22.60. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot—Children's Literature
