Crash: Music from and Inspired by Crash

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
The second volume of the Crash soundtrack -- whose fine original score was written by Mark Isham -- is a collection of tracks that either appear in or are nebulously related to the motion picture. Produced by Shiro Gutzie and Richard Glasser, the 12 cuts here play as a solid mix; there are no spaces. Genres and tempos collide, so "If I..." by KansasCali rap bleeds right into Billy Idol's version of "Plastic Jesus" amped up country-rock, which flows into "Are You Beautiful" adult alternative pop by Chris Pierce, which collides into Civilization's "Free" electronic indie pop, and so on. Bird York's "Save Me" is a high point here, as was her "In the Deep" on the actual soundtrack. The track "Maybe Tomorrow" by the Stereophonics caps both the score volume and this one inexplicably. The m.o. for this methodology is simple: like the interlocking narratives that make up the film, the interlaced genres and song types display interconnectivity and inseparability. Each action one undertakes affects another. It's a bit heavy handed in places and the music can be uneven, but it's nonetheless pleasant and a seamless listen. Those who purchased the original score, however, will have plenty to enjoy. This set is icing, not meat.
