Overview

With the acclaimed Midnight Breed series, New York Times bestselling author Lara Adrian has written thrilling novels of electrifying romance and heart-pounding suspense—page-turners in which humans and vampires live tenuously side by side. In Crave the Night, Adrian brings the Breed and its world to the brink of war, where even the deepest passion can shatter into violence.

Born and raised to be an emotionless killing machine, Nathan is one of the most lethal Breed vampires in existence. A key member of the Order—an elite group of warriors charged with protecting both mortals and vampires—Nathan executes each mission with flawless precision and a total lack of mercy. Now he must pursue a powerful, hidden enemy. But Nathan’s hard discipline and training are no match for the fierce pull he feels toward a young woman he has no right to desire—a woman of wealth and high social standing who has long been promised to another Breed male, and who may also prove to be the key to rooting out Nathan’s elusive quarry.

Jordana lives a life of glittering privilege as a member of a prominent Breed family in Boston. Surrounded by fine things and fawning admirers, Jordana wants for nothing—until she crosses paths with a dark, intense warrior from the Order and finds herself swept into an impulsive, sizzling kiss that neither of them will forget. As much as she tries to deny her deep feelings for Nathan, Jordana cannot resist the craving to be near him, to break through his forbidding walls and see the man he truly is. But getting close to Nathan will thrust Jordana into a treacherous new world, forcing her to risk all she has and all she knows about herself and her past. And loving this seductive man could be the most dangerous temptation of all.

Although polar opposites, the fire that sparks between Nathan and privileged Jordana Gates is not to be denied—ensuring readers are in for one thrilling and romantic read!”RT Book Reviews

1
The undulating crowd packed onto the dance floor inside the throbbing Boston nightclub seemed to collectively sense that death had entered the building.
Nathan took only the barest notice of the sudden change in atmosphere. As one of the Breed, he’d long grown used to the reaction he had on humans.
As a warrior member of the Order and a first--generation Breed male—-the most powerful of his kind—-Nathan’s presence often put even other vampires on alert.
But it was the other part of his nature, the fact that he was born and raised a Hunter, one of a dark legion bred for killing and stripped of all emotion or attachment, which broadcast an unspoken, visceral terror into the room. He saw it in every pair of eyes that furtively glanced his way now through the swirling dance lights in the darkened club.
“They don’t look happy to see us,” quipped Rafe, one of three other Breed warriors who reported to Nathan as their squad captain.
“I doubt Cassian Gray will welcome the Order with open arms either.” This from Nathan’s lieutenant, Elijah, in the slow, laid--back Texas drawl that belied the vampire’s quick skill with any one of the blades or firearms bristling from his weapons belt.
From the other side of Eli, Jax, the third member of tonight’s patrol, quirked a slender black eyebrow over his almond--shaped eyes. “It’s not like we left on the best of terms last time.”
No, they hadn’t. The last time Nathan and his crew had stepped inside the former church that was now one of the city’s most popular—-and least reputable—-hot spots, it ended with the club’s proprietor, Cassian Gray, calling in an armed unit of the Joint Urban Security Taskforce Initiative Squad. The Order didn’t have time to deal with any public or political fallout from JUSTIS tonight.
And if Cass thought he could hide behind the palms he’d greased so well within that combined Breed and human police organization, he was wrong. Dead wrong, if that’s the way he wanted to play it.
The Order had recently come across intel indicating Cass might have other, unknown allies in his pocket. Allies who would make his law enforcement and criminal underworld connections seem like worthless puppets.
Tonight, Nathan and his squad had been tasked with bringing the mysterious club owner in to the Order’s Boston command center for questioning.
“Come on. Let’s go find the bastard.” Ignoring the sharp spike of adrenaline and anxious perspiration injected into the general mélange of stale liquor, smoke, and perfume that hung like a fog in the club, Nathan gestured for his team to follow him deeper inside. “Eli, you and Jax search the public rooms. Rafe and I will take the offices in back.”
With the two warriors heading off on his instructions, Rafe fell in alongside Nathan to cut a path through the crowds on their way to La Notte’s owner’s quarters. There was no security to stop them once they reached Cass’s office, suggesting the man was either working the floor of his club as he so enjoyed or not in the building at all.
Nathan hoped it was the former. If not, this unannounced visit was sure to get back to Cass one way or another, and the Order didn’t want to give the son of a bitch any cause for alarm. They wanted nothing to send him to ground before they could interrogate him about who—-or, rather, what—-he truly was.
Nathan stalked up to the black--painted steel door with the word PRIVATE scratched into it from the tip of a serrated blade. The dead bolt and secondary lock were no trouble at all for the power of his Breed mind. Nathan freed the bolt and the other tumbled open with little more than a second’s concentration.
He pushed the door wide and Rafe followed him into the darkened office. Neither of them needed artificial light; Breed eyesight was flawless, all the more so in the dark.
Nathan made a quick visual scan of the empty room and cursed. “He’s already gone.”
No sign of Cassian Gray at all. The desk was cleared of all papers and personal effects. No computer tablet lying conveniently in the open for them to confiscate. Nothing but a carefully vacated office.
If Nathan had to guess, he figured Cass had been gone for several hours at least. Maybe a full day or more.
“Dammit,” he gritted through clenched teeth.
Rafe meanwhile had broken into a cabinet of paper files and ledgers on the other side of the room. “Just a bunch of accounting records and supply receipts in here. Bar equipment, liquor invoices, band contracts for the club.” The blond vampire shot Nathan a wry look. “Where do you suppose Cass keeps the books for the real moneymaking parts of this operation? Nothing in here at all that mentions the fight arena downstairs or the gambling, pimping, and blood trading. Nothing in here about the other pursuits La Notte caters to either.”
Nathan grunted. Cass’s illegal and other unconventional activities provided in the restricted--access lower level of his club were no secret, but criminal or not, he was careful to protect the interests of himself and his clientele. The records for those parts of his business were surely kept somewhere far more secure than his office at the club.
No, Cassian Gray was a man who knew when and how to keep his secrets.
Rafe had now abandoned the file cabinets to move farther into the gloomy office space. “Hey, check it out,” he called over his shoulder to Nathan. “There’s another door over here.”
The warrior opened it and blew out a whistle. “You gotta see this, man.”
Nathan walked over to find a bedroom on the other side of the door. A king--size four--poster bed draped in black satin sheets dominated the room. The rails between the posters dripped with leather straps and an assortment of manacles and buckled restraints, a few bearing sharp metal spikes.
Rafe barked out a laugh. “Whoever Cassian Gray is, he’s one twisted fuck.”
Nathan stared at the accoutrements of sexual deviance and torture while his friend and comrade stepped inside to jingle one of the studded harnesses. “Leave it alone, Rafe. We’re wasting time. Cass isn’t here, obviously. Let’s go find the others and get out of here.”
As Rafe dropped the leather strap and they prepared to leave, Jax rushed in to meet them. His face was drawn and grave. “We’ve got a problem.”
“You find Cass?” Nathan asked.
Jax shook his head. “Apparently, we just missed him, if you can believe any of the club staff. The problem is Aric Chase. He’s downstairs at the cages. With Rune.”
“Jesus Christ,” Rafe hissed, coming up beside Nathan.
“Eli’s trying to break it up,” Jax said. “But Aric won’t stand down. Shit’s about to get ugly.”
Nathan growled a curse. “Is Carys here too?”
“Not tonight,” Rafe said. “She’s at the art museum with Jordana Gates. The two of them are hosting a patrons’ reception. They’ve been planning it for months.”
Nathan gave a tight nod, grateful for that small mercy. The last thing Carys Chase needed was to see her twin brother take a beating from the cage--fighting killer who’d recently begun sharing her bed.
If the Breed fighter and the daywalking female had shared anything else—-namely a blood bond—-Aric wouldn’t be the only member of the Chase family determined to kick Rune’s swarthy ass. Hell, Nathan would likely be willing to join that fight himself too.
He took off at a dead run, heading with Rafe and Jax for the cage arena in the lower level of La Notte. Shouts and roars and bloodthirsty applause thundered from the bowels of the former church.
And no sooner had he descended into the illegal sporting den than Nathan spotted Aric and Rune. They stood in front of the cages, Eli positioned in between them, mostly holding Aric back. Both Breed males were flashing fangs, eyes glowing bright amber in the dim light of the arena.
Nathan scowled at Jax. “What the fuck’s going on?”
“I’m not sure. It was already getting heated when Eli and I got down here.”
Another of La Notte’s fighters, a blond, long--haired Breed male named Syn, met Nathan’s hot glare from nearby as the din ratcheted up even higher among the spectators gathered in the arena. “Better rein in your baby warrior before Rune leaves him in bloodied shreds.”
“What’s Rune’s problem with Aric tonight?”
Syn smirked. “Rune’s problem?” He shook his head. “Rune was minding his own business, just taking a breather and enjoying some refreshment before tonight’s first match.”
The way Syn leaned on the word refreshment told Nathan that when Aric found him, Rune was likely feeding from one of the paid human blood Hosts employed by Cass to serve his fighters and VIP clientele.
“Your boy started talking shit,” Syn went on. “Started telling Rune the Order had its eye on him. That he’d better watch his step or he was gonna get ashed.”
Holy hell. Nathan acknowledged that this confrontation probably shouldn’t surprise him, but Aric’s personal dislike of the brutal cage fighter had nothing to do with Order business.
Not yet, anyway. If Aric and Carys’s father, Sterling Chase, ever found out his daughter had taken up with an unapologetic underworld player like Rune, Nathan had no doubt the Order as a whole would definitely have something to say about it.
Nathan, Rafe, and Jax pushed through the jeering crowd just in time to see Aric lunge past Elijah to grab hold of Rune. Aric body--slammed the big fighter into the nearby cage, fangs bared and eyes aglow with fury. He threw a couple of wild punches, each deftly avoided by Rune. Aric’s anger opened him wide for a punishing blow.
Rune didn’t hit back. He was glaring lethally, his savage face twisted in rage. But under his shaggy mane of dark brown hair, the undefeated fighter with more kills to his name than any other before him stayed his hand.
Nathan shoved past the onlookers so he and Rafe could peel Aric off Rune. No easy feat, that. Although just twenty years old, Aric was Gen One like Nathan. He was strong as hell and deadly powerful, especially now, when his whole body was electric with animosity toward his sister’s unsavory lover.
“What the fuck, man?” Rafe shouted at his friend. “You lost your mind, Aric? What are you doing down here?”
Aric continued to glower at Rune. He jabbed his finger at the deceptively cool fighter. “You keep to your own. Stay away from her. She’s better than this, better than you.”
Now Rune’s lips twisted slowly, into an ironic smile. “I tell her that all the time. She seems to think otherwise.”
As Rune spoke, one of La Notte’s blood Hosts sauntered over to drape her nearly naked body around him. She took Rune’s earlobe between her teeth, whispering something against his dark, stubble--shadowed cheek. Rune gave her thong--strung behind a meaningful swat and told her to wait for him in one of the nearby booths.
Aric went apeshit. Snarling and seething, he struggled to break loose of his comrade’s hold.
Nathan shot a hard look at Rafe. “Let’s get him out of here.”
“A wise move,” Syn agreed, as Nathan and his crew wrestled Aric away from the cages and out of Rune’s reach.
They hustled the furious vampire out of the club and back onto the street outside. He tried to lunge for the door, but Nathan and Rafe blocked him. He shook them off and rocked back on his bootheels.
“She has to know this can’t go on. Carys has to understand that asshole is beneath her. I can’t stand by and let her get hurt by gutter filth like Rune.” Aric cursed, low and savage. “Goddamn it, I won’t stand by.”
Then he bolted. Not for the club again, but out into the street.
“Shit,” Rafe muttered, raking a hand over his head. He glanced over at Nathan. “You know where he’s going.”
The museum reception. Nathan didn’t have to guess. But he hated like hell to acknowledge it. No more than he hated to acknowledge that he and his patrol squad were going to have to abandon tonight’s search for Cassian Gray and instead go after one of their own.
One of their own who was about to earn the wrath of his beloved sister, if Aric followed through on his threat to see Carys and Rune separated.
And going after Aric meant coming face-to-face with something else Nathan would rather avoid, especially under these circumstances.
Jordana Gates.
The beautiful, Darkhaven--raised female he’d been trying to bar from his thoughts for the past week—-ever since she’d pressed her mouth against his in an entirely unexpected, totally unforgettable kiss. A kiss that had unsettled him and, yes, enraged him.
Disturbed him on a level he was still struggling to comprehend.
“The art museum’s on Huntington Avenue,” Rafe said beside him.
Nathan’s reply was short, almost a growl. “I know where it is.”
He knew more than he had a right to about lovely Jordana Gates and the places she frequented. Primarily so he could take steps to avoid them.
But there could be no avoiding her now. Not with Aric charging off to defend his sister’s virtue.
Nathan rubbed his palm across his clenched jaw. “Fuck it. Let’s go.”
As reluctant as he was to follow the path where this night was heading, Nathan was the first to step off the curb and race for their destination.

    Crave the Night

I feel that I've wasred $11.00, bad plot and NO action. I didn't feel a connection between Jordana and Nathan. The main characters were rather blah, Jordana had no personality and Nathan just spit out the f bomb in every conversation. I loved the original warriors and their mates but feel let down with this new generation. I may not purchase future books in the series

(Sorry for typo in first sentence).

I've been reading this series for a while and I must say I'm a little disappointed. The past books were filled with so much detail and the romance was a little more complex and/or thrilling. This felt more like a novella than an installment because it felt so hurried. Also, I'm not sure I like where the story is headed but i guess I'll wait and find out.

    Was ok

Never quite understand why all the breed males raise a fuss when a breed male falls for a breemate. They've all been there so you'd think they would be a little more understanding. Interesting where the story is gojng with the Atlanteans.

Great series, strong characters, action packed that will keep you reading for hours. Would like to see a deeper relationship development between the main characters, less rushed and more build up like earlier books in the series. Otherwise I continue to be pleased with this series and look forward to what comes next.

Did you hear me sigh after reading the last paragraph? This book

Did you hear me sigh after reading the last paragraph? This book was just as amazing as all the previous books in this series. I am another "more than satisfied" reader.

Crave the Night is Nathans and Jordanas story. The heat index was off the charts! I could practically see steam coming out of my Kindle. Jordana surprised me. I thought she'd be the pampered, sheltered socialite and she was that and so much more. Even though she may not be worldly, she's got a back bone of steel! Nathan's story blindsided me. I was expecting military-like training but what actually happened was cruelty at it's worst. After reading, I understand why he was the way he was. There are lots of unexpected surprises in this story and it was amazing!

My day felt complete when I finished reading this book. Now I'm finding it hard to get into another book because my mind is still with the Midnight Breed. They are running into a whole other level of problems and I can't wait to see where Lara Adrian takes them next.

Received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'm still trying to get used to the new crop of Order warriors even though most of them are the children of the old warriors. Nathan was always a wonder to me. I mean, was he gonna turn out like Hunter and embrace the Order or was he gonna stay his path with Dragos and take his place once he died? It could've gone either way, but thankfully in the last book, Edge of Dawn, it showed a little of him and it was good. Damn good. So, when I saw this book was about him....I think I might've squealed like a total fangirl. I'm so happy that Nathan not only embraced the life of the Order, but also got a mate and was able to live a little more fully. I love this series and it's still getting better with each book.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

    4.5 Stars
~Reviewed by ANN & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

Nothing beats good writing and that is what ultimately makes Lara Adrian stand out amongst her peers. In the twelfth book of the Midnight Breed series, Adrian takes an emotionless Breed warrior named Nathan and pairs him with a kind-hearted socialite named Jordana Gates. As a warrior, Nathan wishes to keep his distance from Jordana’s delicate world. However, when a fiery kiss ignites a consuming passion he has never felt for anyone before, Nathan finds resisting Jordana to be a losing battle.

Adrian doesn’t hold back with the intensity or the passion. The sexual tension between Nathan and Jordana is off the charts and sizzles each of the pages. While slow-burning in its intensity at the beginning, Adrian really shows off her writing skill in a series of twists that will surely make reader’s head spin. I was baffled and pleasantly surprised to see such detail and planning work out in the end. It’s clear that Adrian had a formulated plan going into this book and seeing it unravel effortlessly and flawlessly really showcases her talent as a writer and storyteller. It reminds me of why I started reading Lara Adrian’s books in the first place. Even twelve books into the series, there is still a clear path in which the author wishes to go and as a reader, I’m definitely on board with that ride!

CRAVE THE NIGHT is stunning in its flawless execution. Lara Adrian has the rare ability to lure readers right into her books, taking them on a ride they will never forget.

    Midnight Breed #12

I received an advance reader edition of this book from Random House Publishing Group via Net Galley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

    4 Stars

I did it again. I am one of those people who like to do things in the proper order. I like to follow the rules and do what I am supposed to be doing. So why do I keep jumping around instead of reading a series in the proper order? To be honest, I already know this answer. The problem is that I tend to overestimate what I am going to accomplish when I request books. When I requested this book, I remember thinking that I would read the entire series leading up to this book. Obviously, things did not quite work that way.

My 4 star rating is based completely on the fact that I enjoyed this book. It was one of those books that I liked a lot but I did not feel compelled to stay up all night to finish it. I have read books #1 and #2 in this series and I really liked them so I had a good idea what to expect with this book. Since I was able to skip books #3 through #11 and follow this story, I do think this book could be read apart from the series. Of course, I do realize that I probably missed a few things because I skipped so much of the series so it is probably best to read the series in order if you can.

The focus of this book is Nathan and Jordana. Nathan is a Breed Warrior who was trained to be a hunter. Jordana is a Breedmate who was adopted and raised by her father, a Breed male. The pair are very aware of each other at the start of the story and have shared a kiss before the events in this book. The attraction between the pair is intense. Jordana is promised to marry a prominent Breed male but the spark she should feel is simply not there.

Nathan finds himself drawn to Jordana and immensely protective of her. The pair fall into insta-love and have their fair share of steamy scenes. When Jordana finds herself in danger, Nathan will risk everything to save her.

The plot in this book was somewhat predictable. Troubled man sees smoking hot woman across the room, man falls in love with woman, they run into trouble because they fail to communicate, woman finds herself in trouble, man saves woman. We have all read something along those lines at some point. This book was simply fun for me. The chemistry between the pair was wonderfully written. This is a book that most people are going to pick up simply because they are looking for something fun to read and it delivers. To be honest, I really did not make any attempt to over analyze this book and just had fun with it and I am really glad that I did.

I would recommend this book to others. Lara Adrian has written a wonderful, sexy story in this book. I do still plan to read the whole series....in order at some point. I seriously wonder how much that may affect my enjoyment of this book.

After falling in love with all of the original characters, now the series is taking on the time of the generation of their kids. I love where Adrian is taking this story with new foes and characters with their own hidden pasts and secrets. I found it difficult to put this book down at parts and felt the characters heartache. Great story, totally worth buying!

Crave the Night, A Midnight Breed Novel, Lara Adrian Review from

Crave the Night, A Midnight Breed Novel, Lara Adrian
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews

Way back when I got my first kindle I discovered Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed novels, beginning with Kiss of Midnight and was hooked. I was so pleased to find there were several out already and have been an avid reader since those first ones. Each book is part of an overall story arc and yet focusses on a specific couple. There's hot, erotic sex, and a real sense of danger in the drama that accompanies the romance. Books with a real story to tell, that are not just sex with a bit of story thrown in. Paranormal seems prolific in that type of read, but that's not for me, I need ones with a proper story attached that will engage and engross me for hours.
I get all that once again with this book. Looking back to earlier ones I recall Nathan's rescue. He was born in horrific circumstances, bred to be a killer to the mad vampire Dragos, who was building his own personal army. By age seven Nathan was already a trained killer, undergone unimaginable cruelty and brutality in his training, and taught to control and give up any emotions as a weakness, and some of that darkness shadows him now, even though its twenty years since his rescue. He's devoted his life to The Order, has few friends and keeps himself very contained. He feels that's going to be his life, solo and controlled, as its the only way to contain the monster he thinks he is. Then he sees Jordana and something connects them...
As usual there's a great backing story, lots of erotic and sensual sex, dangers from known and unknown sources, puzzles and problems to solve and a real surprise towards the end. Even after so many books Lara still produces something fresh. Some long running series get tired after a while - I loved the early Anita Blake/Laurell Hamilton book,s but after ten or so the story gradually went more and more downhill – but with these as there's an overall connecting theme of the Order, but each one being about different people there's the potential for lots more to come – and I hope Lara does continue for a while more. You could read this as a stand alone, there's enough explained about the past for reader to keep up, but I feel reading earlier ones, at least some of them, will enhance the enjoyment.
Stars: cracking read, five stars and a keeper.

The only thing I dislike about Lara Adrian's books are the ending because I have to wait so long for the next book in the series. I really loved Nathan and Jordanna story. I like the direction Ms. Adrian is taking this series. The only thing is it's souding less and less as a breed series and more of this new race that clearly has good and bad characters in it. I can't wait to see what comes next. Let's not wait too long, though.

    Fantastic story!

This is a fantastic series and I have enjoyed what Lara Adrian has done with each and every book. Nathan and Jordanna's story was fantastic. Jordanna coming from a family that has expected she be the sweet good girl her breeding expects. Nathan coming from a background of such horrid things and being taught from the start to feel nothing and only to be a hunter and assassin. Nathan and Jordanna meet and has an innocent kiss but it turns both their worlds upside down. Jordanna is a breedmate and has someone her father wants her to marry once she reaches her 25th birthday. But since she has meet Nathan she is beginning to wonder if there is more to life than she is currently living. Oh she knows she should stay away from Nathan since he is probably the most lethal vampire she has ever met plus he's a Gen One. But there is something that pulls her to him. Nathan doesn't want to want Jordanna. He should have more control especially with the world he was raised in. But he can't stay away from her or stop wanting her. He should be focused on figuring out whats going on with the Atlanteans the Order is focused on finding but his focus remains on Jordanna. Their chemistry is explosive and hot. Lara Adrian gives us a great storyline and just when the Order thinks their threats have been eliminated they find there are even more dangerous threats they face. I loved this book and as always cannot wait to see what the next book brings us. Great series and highly recommend!

Crave The Night (Midnight Breed #12) by Lara Adrian

Nathan is Breed vampire and member of the Order.  His record is impeccable.  For the first time, he begins to lose focus as he is mesmerized by socialite Jordana Gates.

I enjoyed hearing Nathan’s story, especially since we were introduced  to him when he was thirteen years old in the Drago’s Hunter cell. He was raised to be a killer, never having a childhood.  He is rightfully feared.  I appreciate that he is a good man/vampire considering what he has been through.

Jordana Gates has been raised to be prim and proper in Darkhaven.  She is polished and refined. However, I love that she is down to earth and not snotty.

I liked Nathan and Jordana together.  Nathan was raised as an assassin and Jordana works for an art museum.  They seem like such opposites yet they work well together.

Crave The Night had so many interesting twists that I was thoroughly engrossed. This in one book that is impossible to put down.   The action was nonstop and heart stopping.

Lara Adrian is a talented writer whose work I always enjoy.  Her stories are original and well written.  Each book in the Midnight Breed Series is innovative and captivating.

    Total Diappointment

I have been reading the Breed series since its inception and unfortunately the last few books weren't good. Especially this last one. It reads like a cheap romance novel. In previous books in this series there was always a good plot with adventure and mystery not so in these last few books. No real depth to characters and the plot is slightly glanced over. After waiting close to 2 years for this book I am sorely disappointed and a total waste of 10.99
