All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
Donna Summer sounds younger here than on her previous studio album, 1991's Mistaken Identity, or just about any of the isolated tracks that surfaced throughout the previous 17 years, which is a good thing as frequently as it is a bad thing. Crayons benefits from Summer's effortless energy; she was clearly into making this album, and her voice is as able and flexible as ever. However, almost all of the material with which she has to work -- several stylistic angles are taken with the likes of Danielle Brisebois Natasha Bedingfield, Kelly Clarkson Greg Kurstin Lily Allen, Nelly Furtado, J.R. Rotem Leona Lewis, Trey Songz, and several others -- would make more sense on an ...

One exception, if only from a lyrical standpoint, is "The Queen Is Back," where Summer refers to herself in the third person, as well as her past: "So many years ago on the radio/She crept into your soul and learned to love you." But it's really the type of move you'd expect from an aspiring diva on her second or third album. In-fashion vocal effects, which Summer certainly does not need, detract from a handful of these tracks, but as a whole, the album won't have trouble pleasing fans who just want to hear their queen have a blast and tear it up.

What turns out to be her very last album before her untimely passing, this is truly a rainbow of styles which glow on the title track, Crayons, Stamp Your Feet, Fame (the Game), The Queen is Back, Be Myself Again, and Mr Music!  I miss her dearly.  There will never be another like Donna Summer!

This new album is just awesome! It is hip with lots of energy in her voice as always. I actually like all the songs on her new album. And I hope there is a 6th grammy coming. Also, I think the track, &amp quot Slide Over Backward&amp quot is a great example of her talent as a vocalist.

I was at her first show of the Crayons tour in Vienna Virginia and was blown away!! An incredible concert from a true artist! While Crayons is the must have CD for 2008, to see Ms. Summer on stage performing songs from Crayons as well as her hits from the past, was a moment in time I will not soon forget. Thank you Ms. Summer for returning and taking back what has always been rightfully yours.....the crown!

Donna Summer has always felt conflicted about her being typecast as a talented vocalist of mere "dance music", about her fame, and about some of her fans. After a seventeen year hiatus, Donna heralds her royal return! In a noble effort to recapture some of her past glory, Dance-Floor Donna sings with obvious references to her earlier Disco Diva days: "So many years ago on the radio, she crept into ya soul and loved to love ya all...The Queen is Back!" Well, partly. * * * One gets the strong impression that DS has resented her being pigeonholed by fans and the music industry with the "Queen of Disco" moniker, and has persistently tried to peck out of this disco/dance cage with forays into other, more "respectable" musical categories. Yet, despite her tenacity, she has never really attained the popular and financial heights she once knew whenever straying too far from these familiar genres. She crows, "Fame made a fool out of everyone...It's all about who they think you are," and "Let me introduce myself. I'm a woman that you've never seen. You might know me from somewhere else as someone that I've never been." * * * Her Majesty seemingly wants to reclaim her crown while at the same time implying she'd like to abdicate her throne! Our Queen, perhaps, but a reluctant, conflicted Queen. * * * Despite repeated efforts to expand her musical repertoire in the past, these have mostly been fair to failing commercial diversions. Donnapologists may disagree. While promising "the Queen is Back!" on *CRAYONS*, she nevertheless tries the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach again---with mixed results. The album starts off with great fanfare, full of the energy, freshness and passion we have missed, as she tries on varied contemporary dance music styles. However, more than halfway into the album, the excitement peters out, plummeting into generic, lackluster, indistinguishable filler of dance numbers, pop tunes and ballads, unworthy of our Grande Dame. While listening to her convincing impersonation of Tina Turner in Track 9 may be a hoot, her "stretch marks" throughout the CD are most embarrassingly revealed here. * * * So, does she feel unfairly bound to restrict her God-given talent mainly to fan-friendly dance tunes? Rumors also persist about her love/hate/love relationship with a sizable portion of her fan base after finding religion: gay men. The story goes she loves the sinners, hates the sin, loves the sinners' money. After 17 years of mounting bills, is this CD just Donna's most recent attempt of holding her nose while going in for another financial dip at the same well? Heaven Knows. * * * The Royal "We" are glad the Queen is back. Unfortunately, her tiara has lost much of its former regal glitter.

The Queen is Back in Deed

I love love love this CD - favorite song is The Queen is Back - Crayons - Driving Down Brazil and STAMP Your Feet. Now Mistaken Identity and All Systems Go were not a huge hit but had some amazing songs on them and should not be slagged off - they were the first 2 CD's that I bought by Donna Summer - I did go out and buy the rest - but these 2 cd's I still listen to this day.

As the title of one of the songs states, "The Queen Is Back", this reads to be very true from hearing this robust collection of tunes. Lyrically, the set is dead-on. Musically, the production is crisp, new and fierce. And vocally, well what is there to say except, "All hail the queen!" I can tell you this now, not a finer set of music will be found this year. I expect a Grammy nod for this one!

Good mix of dance and slow tracks. Its a CD that I've been waiting for ! You can tell that she sings from her heart as the lyrics tells us what she feels .... eg tracks like Be Myself Again.

    Better than ever

A great collection of music by a woman whose voice is as strong today as it was when she was churning out hits in the 70s and 80s. The eclectic mix includes dance tracks, ballads, a touch of World music, and some pure pop gems.

    This Queen never went away

This woman never ceases to amaze me. Tho' one title says the queen is back as far as i'm concerned this queen never went anywhere. The're are so many different styles & sounds on this cd that you just can't get enough. Everything from everyone else out there now sounds the same. Especially Mariah. I'm not bashing her but everything she does sounds the same. I didn't even know "Touch My Body" was from a new cd until they started jamming it down everybody's throat! I actually thought it was another single being released from her last cd. To me that's not artistry. Donna Summer's "Crayons" definetly is...

    THE QUEEN IS BACK

Move over Madonna, move over Mariah - Donna Summer drops da' bomb! From the #1 dance smash "I'm A Fire", to the current stadium stomping "Stamp Your Feet", to Donna proclaiming all across the nation the "Queen is Back" this is going to be the CD of the Summer in more ways than one. Crayons is a virtual box of crayons with all the colors inside from dance to pop to hip hop and even some African tribal sounds - don't miss this CD or Donna live in concert this summer!

    Fun, energetic, dance heavy album!

I was so excited when I heard that Donna Summer would be releasing an album in 2008! Once again, she succeeds! This is a fun, energetic album, a combination of all the aspects of Donna's music career! The first 4 songs are slamming high energy dance numbers, with Stamp Your Feet, Mr. Music, Crayons and The Queen Is Back. Donna injects some of her old song titles in the lyrics on Queen. The slower numbers are nice. I like the swamp-themed groove in Slide Down Backwards. Science of Love and Bring Down the Reign continue her dance reign. And the songs are diverse--no two songs sound the same. But I want to mention a high moment in the album with I'm A Fire. This song alone is the best to recall Donna's disco era from the '70s. It's like you're transplanted to 1977, 1978 or 1979 for 7 minutes, when she had hits like Last Dance, Bad Girls or On the Radio left and right. It sounds like Heatwave's Boogie Nights or The Groove Line a little bit. But the pulsating, throbbing, grooves and beats are mesmerizing and fun to listen to. It's like clashing 1977 and 2008 together in the same song, disco, but brought to the 21st century. It's so perfectly done! Few artists can return after a long hiatus with such a dynamic solid album like Donna Summer has. I hope that this is a hit in 2008!
