All Music Guide - Jason Ankeny
From Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" to the Beach Boys' "Little Deuce Coupe" to Prince's "Little Red Corvette" to R. Both the literal and the metaphorical meanings of the automobile have proven remarkably adaptable and relevant over the years, remaining an iconic shorthand for themes of wealth, sex, and freedom whether the music in question is rockabilly or rap. Crazy 'Bout an Automobile casts its particular net over material dating from the late '50s and early '60s, and if the sheer volume of tracks and the overall quality of the set are accurate indicators, then the period in question was the car song's heyday -- virtually every make and model of auto seems celebrated via its own theme music, all of it wonderfully emblematic of the early rock & roll era. Highlights include Charlie Ryan and the Timberline Riders' "Hot Rod Lincoln," the Delicates' "Black and White Thunderbird," the Mar-Keys' "Hot Rod," and Gene Vincent's eerily prophetic "Why Don't You People Learn to Drive."
