I picked this up on a recent trip to southern Mexico where our church works with Mayan-Tzeltal congregations. You could live there for fifty years, I think, and still be a newcomer to the indigenous culture. You do catch glimpses of insight, however, from Carter's novel. I've been to the village of San Juan Chamul and another town that figures prominently in the narrative and the reader can visit them too through Carter's prose. Was this review helpful?
