A powerful collection of short stories telling the tales of a Mexican-American childhood ideal for fans of Gary Soto

Welcome to Southern Texas.
Meet Loco, a dog with a passion for firecrackers. And Pedro, an altar boy forced to lean a hard lesson from two of the toughest, oldest men ever to serve the Lord. Jordan and Todd are two boys from California who don't know what they're in for when they push their Texas cousins a little too far.  Loosely based on the author's own childhood as a Mexican-American boy in south Texas, this story collection is a moving whirlwind of humor and insight—brash, tender, and full of the unexpected.

A collection of nine stories about Mexican American kids growing up in the Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas.

What People Are Saying

From the Publisher
" Rice's work also deserves praise for presenting a slice of Mexican-American life that is neither over-romanticized, operating as a veiled and vitriolic social commentary, or tainted with easy nostalgia." —The Austin Chronicle

"Nine slice of life stories, told from multiple points of view and in different voices, resonate with the sounds and sights of a Mexican-American childhood spent in South Texas."-VOYA

"Rice...blends humor and precise detail, creating believable imperfect, complex characters that are once rowdy, subversive, and devoted to family and tradition."-Booklist

"A powerful collection that should enjoy a wide audience." —School Library Journal

WOW, YOU ABSOLUTLY MUST READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

Crazy loco is an amazing book overall! This book is a collection of different kinds of short stories. Throughout these short stories there are different venues and things that people go through. The plots of each story have some sort of similar storyline to one another. In each short story they all relate because of some sort of teen problem or the author is explaining the inner workings of his religion. My favorite character is actually in the first short story his name is Romero and he is having some problems talking to girls. So through the help of some upper classmen he works through his little problem and I feel like I can relate. If you are looking for a book this is a really good one is you like teen dramas or Mexican heritage, then this is a good book for you and you should most definitely read it. It starts off strong and continues that way throughout the remainder of the book. I believe that this book is for teens or anyone really, that likes drama or comedy short stories, he intends for us to be entertained by this book. Overall it was a great book. Even though it wasn’t a major action packed read it was a really good book, I highly recommend it.

    Great book!

I read this book to my middle school students often. They have always loved it. The short stories make it easy to break up a read. I like using it as a read aloud to close the day with
