Its aim: to exist as a natural place where humans and aliens can work out their differences peacefully. Yet in reality the station is a focus of tension, malice, and intrigue—with ...

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - John Peacock
Fans of the television show Babylon 5 will find this book an infuriating blend of fascinating details and out-of-date information. Due to the exigencies of publishing, any book like this cannot have the latest information, since the show is still being produced and because of the obsessive level of secrecy surrounding plot development. In fact, the majority of the book seems to have been written in the early stages of production for the third season, late 1995 or early 1996. Since that time, seasons three and four have been broadcast, and the fifth and final season ran last winter. As such, this book can only be described as premature and incomplete, of interest truly only to the most obsessed fans, or possible to new fans of the show now that the first four seasons will be in nationwide reruns. The initial chapters include descriptions of the universe of Babylon 5 and the races that live there, as well as the lead characters on the show. The origin of the series, with creator J. Michael Straczynski, and details of the revolutionary use of computer-generated special effects are handsomely accompanied by many full-color photos. The next three chapters cover the actors playing the continuing human and alien characters. Detailed interviews are included with all of the actors who played key roles on the show. The remaining chapters include a close-up of a single day of production and an episode guide for the first four seasons. Throughout the book, there are numerous photos both in black and white and in color. The episode guide includes production notes, continuing cast and guest star credits, as well as a brief description of the episode's plot. The last five episodes of the fourth season include only cast credits, since they had not been broadcast when this book was presumably being wrapped up. As a fan of the show myself, I hope that a second edition will be forthcoming after the end of the series' five-year run. Illus. Photos. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
