Library Journal
Published as the catalog for a 1995 exhibition at the Library of Congress, this is a sumptuously presented tour of 200 chefs-d'oeuvre from the Bibliothque nationale de France (BnF), now incorporating the Bibliothque Nationale. Chosen for their beauty, historic significance, and intellectual importance, the printed materials presented here range from works done in Carolingian times to manuscripts by Proust and Sartre, with many extraordinary or unique copies included. The theme of the exhibition was the direct relation of culture and power in the creation of the French state and French identity, and it is well supported. Essays and catalog entries are by BnF staffers and vary in tone and content, but overall the level is high. Highly recommended for its detailed view of French culture based on definitive highlights from the written and visual record.-Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Lib.

An elegantly produced volume which serves as a catalogue for a major exhibition at the Library of Congress (beginning September 1995) presenting a selection of the Bibliotheque nationale de France's rare and beautiful treasures. Four American scholars write about the connection between French cultural expression and political power from medieval to modern times. Four French experts discuss some 200 of the objects in the library (most depicted here), exploring their historical significance and their connection with the Bibliotheque nationale de France. Among the objects: a ninth century liturgical manuscript, the bronze throne of Dagobert on which Napoleon sat at the founding of the order of the Legion d'Honneur; and Marguerite d'Orlean's 15th-century Book of Hours. 9x12.25" Annotation c.
