Editorial Reviews
Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This updated version of Creating Strategic Readers is a great text for those teachers looking for reading and literacy strategies for diverse elementary-aged student groups. Chapter one discusses "the comprehensive Literacy Classroom using ?CAI'"; C stands for curriculum, A is for assessment, and I is for instruction, and the author defines these three as essentials to the infrastructure the successful teacher will use to support his/her students' literacy. The developmental stages of reading are also defined in the first chapter and it provides a theoretical baseline for the CAI. Chapters two through six focus on the five components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) and are framed in a consistent manner throughout. Each chapter begins with an overview of the component and identifying strategies to use with each. This is followed by a demonstration of the CAI framework and a number of strategy assessments that help teachers evaluate students in that focus area. Instructional techniques are then discussed that help teachers understand how best to hit various reading stages as teacher and student work toward the independent use of each strategy (I like that she highlights the necessity of modeling the various strategies). Following those five chapters is an assessment matrix which I thought would be very useful to teachers. The reference section is thorough and up-to-date and an additional benefit found at the back of the text is the DVD with print-ready resources. This is definitely one of those useful texts elementary teachers will appreciate. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.Product Details
