School Library Journal
Each book outlines the development of a popular Marvel superhero. In Captain America, readers see the surrounding issues and concerns that shaped this American icon. Spider-Man offers a lot of detail about creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. One chapter explains the "Marvel Method" of creating comic books and describes the collaboration between the writer and the artist. While much of the vocabulary in both books is above a fourth-grade level, the terms will be familiar to most young comic-book fans. Many of the full-color illustrations have been taken from the comics. These books do not include much about the current happenings of the characters, but they are great for kids interested in the industry.
