VOYA - Voya Reviews
At last there is a biographical encyclopedia for teens that actually includes people of interest to teens! This highly accessible and easy-to-read collection of 288 minibiographies lives up to its rather mundane title and goes much further than expected in offering sixth- to ninth-grade readers a glimpse into the lives of an eclectic list of artists and performers. Names profiled include Beck, Sex Pistols, Ethan Hawke, Nine Inch Nails, Bob Dylan, Frank Lloyd Wright, LL Cool J, Hanson, Sarah McLachlan, Claude Monet, and Stephen King. Alphabetically ordered, each volume contains the table of contents for all volumes, arranged both alphabetically and by artistic field. Artists selected are grouped by area of achievement--Actors and Actresses, Animators and Cartoonists, Authors, Comedians, Designers and Sculptors, Directors and Screen Writers, Painters, Photographers, and Singers and Musicians. Of special note is the rich assortment of young adult authors represented. Here readers happily will find Hobbs, Hinton, Voigt, Crutcher, Soto, Cormier, Kerr, Myers, Sleator, Stine, Woodson, and Zindel--all vital inclusions for librarians in need of solid biographical information about the authors they booktalk. Each entry includes a photograph, biographical information, personal data, a well-chosen quote from the subject, an essay detailing the person's career, thematic considerations and controversies, a boxed sidebar listing of major works, a short listing of sources for further information, and in most cases, an online Web site address. Librarians familiar with Gale biographies might detect material here from other sources, notably Authors and Artists for Young Adults (Gale, 1989+), an ongoingseries now up to thirty-five volumes--their first to combine visual artists and authors for teens. Its entries are longer and more detailed; some are adapted for this new resource with snappier biographies and a more diverse mix of all types of creative artists who appeal to teens. From an arrangement and layout standpoint, this set demands a better overall design. There are no running heads to let readers know about whom they are reading, and only the smallest of print at the bottom of the page close to the spine designates the person profiled. With its ample white space, this set has the feel of a collection of cursory entries rather than a significant contribution to the field of biography. Despite these design reservations, this highly recommended purchase for all public and middle school libraries soon will become well-worn through use by both teens and librarians. Index. Illus. Photos. Biblio. Further Reading. 2000, Gale, Ages 12 to Adult, 1221p. in 4 vols. PLB $350/set. Reviewer: Dr. Stefani Koorey

Gr 5 Up-A wealth of information on a wide range of 20th-century talents. The accessible essays cover the childhood, education, personal life, and career history of each artist; Sean "Puffy" Combs, Leonardo DiCaprio, M. C. Escher, Jacqueline Woodson, and Wynonna are among those included. Boxed sidebars with selected listings labeled "Choice Cuts" for musicians/music groups; "Popular Works" for actors and visual artists; and "Don't Miss-" for authors feature the person's most important works. Average-quality, black-and-white photographs accompany the entries. Volume one includes a listing of artists by field and a complete index concludes each volume. While the latest "hot" performers such as Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, and Enrique Iglesias are not here, young people will find information on plenty of other popular individuals.-Jana R.
