This is one of my favorite resources to use with children and adolescents. The book offers a variety of games, exercises, and therapeutic tools to help children who are struggling. Chapters focus on emotion identification, coping skills, self-esteem, and social skills. This book is a must have for any mental health professional working with children. The activities give guidance for age group, treatment problem, and a of list material items needed for activities. The activities are hands on and give the children coping skills and tools to use in everyday life. I have used this book so much I had to tape the binding!!!! Liana Lowenstein's books are an invaluable resource for any mental health professional working with children and adolescents.

Creative Interventions for Troubled Children and Youth is a wonderful resource for working with this population! I recommend this resource for any clinician working with children and youth. This book breaks down the activities into five categories (Assessment, Identifying and Expressing Feelings, Coping with Feelings, Social Skills, and Self-Esteem), so you can always quickly and easily find activities to suit your current needs (essential in a busy practice!). There is also an 'At A Glance' section to help you determine which activities to choose from based on category, age range, and modality (group, individual, or family). Each activity is created to provide ease of use with the materials listed out, along with potential goals and a post-activity discussion component. I also love that the activities come with their own worksheets or use common materials you are likely to have on-hand or can obtain for minimal cost. I highly recommend this book.

This book has been so useful to me in my work with youth struggling with difficult feelings and behaviors. The table in the front that separates activities by age, modality, and theme is a great guide and one that I reference often. Many of these techniques help clients gain access to intangible ideas such as anger, stress, and sadness through tangible projects and games. "Feelings Tic Tac Toe" (pg. 34-35) is a favorite among my clients!!! The section of activities aimed at coping with feelings is a valuable resource and a special addition that can't be found in many play therapy activity/technique resources. The self-esteem activities are unique and fun, and the graduation section has helped me develop successful terminations with those youth who have worked hard and are finishing their work with me. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has felt "stuck" with clients, as it has definitely helped me conceptualize therapeutic ideas in a different way.

Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth by Liana Lowenstein was written for therapeutic work with children, teens, and families. It consists of games, art activities, and such which deal with assessment, identifying feelings, coping with feelings, social skills, and self-esteem. It has received great reviews from people in the social work/counseling fields. The only concern that I've read in other reviews is that this book recommends some commercial games. This could be a problem, but most people would be able to modify the suggested activity without purchasing the game. After taking a close look at this book, I wanted to see if it would be a valuable asset in my school and I was pleased to discover that the activities could be used in a classroom, individual, and /or small group setting. I believe this resource can be a valuable tool wherever adults are working with children to learn more about themselves and how to handle the stresses in life. I believe they can be used with children before they receive the label of "troubled." I would highly recommend this resource.

This book is full of creative and engaging ideas for use with children, teens, and families. There are therapeutic games, art activities, and other innovative activities to cover a wide variety of issues such as feelings identification, social skills, coping, and self esteem. There is also a chapter of assessment activities. The ideas are easy to implement and clients respond so well to them. This book will be helpful to therapists, counselors, family therapists, group facilitators, teachers, guidance counselors, group home workers, etc. I use this book over and over! Other books on this topic I recommend: More Creative Interventions for Troubled Children and Youth (Lowenstein) Assessment and Treatment Activities for Children, Adolescents, and Families: Practitioners Share Their Most Effective Techniques (Lowenstein) Techniques, Techniques, Techniques (Kenney-Noziska) Jennifer Kolari MSW.,RSW Author of Connected Parenting
