"Scott Nicholson knows the territory. Follow him at your own risk." -- Stewart O'Nan, A Face in the Crowd

When artists gather at a remote Appalachian estate for a retreat, they are unaware that their energy is feeding something unwholesome. Sculptor Mason Jackson and dying parapsychologist Anna Galloway must uncover the dark secrets of Korban Manor before their spirits are trapped forever.
--------------------
CREATIVE SPIRIT
A modern Gothic thriller

After parapsychologist Anna Galloway is diagnosed with metastatic cancer, she has a recurring dream in which she sees her own ghost. The setting of her dream is the historic Korban Manor, which is now an artist's retreat in the remote Appalachian Mountains. Drawn both by the ghost stories surrounding the manor and her own sense of destiny, Anna signs up for the retreat.

Sculptor Mason Jackson has come to Korban Manor to make a final, all-or-nothing attempt at success before giving up his dreams. When he becomes obsessed with carving Ephram Korban's form out of wood, he questions his motivation but is swept up in a creative frenzy unlike any he has ever known.

The manor itself has secrets, with fires that blaze constantly in the hearths, portraits of Korban in every room, and deceptive mirrors on the walls. With an October blue moon looming, both the living and the dead learn the true power of their dreams.

    Creepy Goodness

This book made me want to cover my eyes and hide in the closet - but I couldn't put it down long enough. You won't find a typical ghost or haunted house story here. The plot is original and kept me on edge from start to finish. Scott Nicholson has a gift for breathing life into his words, inviting us to step into his characters' world and share their experiences. If you're looking for horror with substance, this is the one for you.

    Awesome!

A group of artists come to Korban House, in the North Carolina mountains, to take part in a six-week retreat. Korban House is an authentic piece of history ¿ the owner stipulated in his will that the house and lands were to be kept in the same condition as they were when he died 150 years prior, falling from the widow¿s walk to his death on the blue moon in October. Included in the group are writers, painters, a sculptor, musicians and even a parapsychologist. Korban House is also said to be haunted ¿ maybe that explains the mysterious woman in white that several of the guests see? Or the compulsion that several of the guests feel to work on their projects obsessively? And what will happen on the upcoming October blue moon ¿ the first in 150 years?

This was an insanely creepy story, and the tension is kept high throughout the book. Twists and red herrings abound, and I was certainly surprised at the events that take place toward the end. The main characters in the story are very well developed, and the plot flows along smoothly. However, many of the sub-characters are not even named, or if they are, they are kept so far in the background that you don¿t learn anything about them. However, I¿m not sure how they could have been developed without breaking into the flow of the plot; it just seemed like the place was overcrowded. That shouldn¿t stop you from reading this wonderfully scary book, though ¿ highly recommended!

    HAIR RAISING!!

This is probably the shortest review I¿ve written on any book so far, but ¿Creative Spirit¿ is easy to sum up in a few sentences, so here goes. ¿Unputdownable¿ doesn¿t roll off the tongue so well for me, but that¿s just what it is. Wonderfully creepy are also great words to capture the essence of this book. For quite some time now I¿ve been searching around for a book that would scare the living daylights out of me, as I am a big horror / paranormal fan, and don¿t scare easily. How lucky for me to have won a copy of ¿Creative Spirit¿ by Scott Nicholson for review! Remember how haunted house stories used to be written? This book is just like that ¿ although it¿s not just any haunted house, but something far more sinister. Voodoo, witchcraft, shockingly slow deaths, possession, and loads more hair-raising goodies are to be found right here. It contains all the elements a good old fashioned, spine chilling supernatural story should have. I suppose I should mention what really adds to this book is good, solid characters with strong personalities, each with their own in depth background story; as well as medium to fast pacing of the storyline that builds up the suspense really well until you can take no more. The author hardly gives you enough time to catch your breath before launching into the next bloodcurdling twist! I won¿t recommend you read this before turning off the lights though ¿ you¿ll keep looking over your shoulder and hearing strange noises in the dark... But don¿t say I didn¿t warn you! WARNING: Not for the fainthearted.

    Highly recommended-please read

This book was a mystery but not with the stereotypical haunted house. The story had some different relationships and trials. The characters were well thought out and realistic. I did not want to put this book down and I would highly recommend it as a good read for anyone. Well done Scott.

    OK read

Decent enough story line, but there was so much more the author could have done with the characters. OK, but not fabulous.
