Billy and his sister, Sheena, unwittingly dive into a terrifying mystery when they accept a surprise invitation to HorrorLand--the amusement park that always lives up to its name.
But first Billy and Sheena must sink or swim aboard a doomed ship that happens to be underwater--with a captain who happens to be dead. At least, he used to be!

School Library Journal

Gr 2-4

R. L. Stine's tale (Scholastic, pap. 2008) opens with Billy and his sister Sheena spending time with their uncle on his hi-tech research boat where they discover that they are near the wreckage of a long-lost pirate ship. The three wedge themselves into their uncle's deep-sea submarine to search for the ruins. No sooner do they discover the ship than things start to go horribly awry. Narrated by Jeff Woodman, continuous eerie background music and simple, but copious sound effects give the production the feel of an old-time radio play. Distractingly loud mood music interferes with the narration of the opening sequence, but then quiets down. The undead skeletons' chant is unnerving and spine-chilling, and a suggested beheading (only in a character's imagination) seems excessively violent. This creepy, ghostly adventure is not for the faint of heart.-Jennifer Verbrugge, Dakota County Library, Galaxie Branch, Apple Valley, MN

I read this with my 5-year-old, scary-story-loving son. Creepy without being nightmare-inducing, this story is just as kid-friendly as it was when I was a kid. My son loved it, and is saving up his chore money for the next book in the series!

My 1st grader is a voracious reader who stumbled across the first book of the Horrorland series and loved it. I was concerned about the age appropriateness of the books and have been reading them, too. The first book was okay, but this was one a bit more intense and graphic. No pictures in it; so it will have to come from your imagination. Maybe mine is too vivid. . . Otherwise, a good read. I will be sure to preread any others others before my young one gets to it. ;)
