Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
"Why did the baby firefly get a prize at school? Because he was so bright for his age." This is just one of the over fifty humorous and clean jokes in this book of bug jokes. Part of the "Read-it! Joke Books" series, it is filled with one-liners mostly about commonly known bugs such as ants, beetles, and flies. Most of the jokes are delightful groaners and youngsters will think them clever. Some of the answers, however, will likely require explanation because they stretch too far in trying to make a joke. The illustrations are bright, comical and spaced sporadically throughout. Aimed at emergent readers, this book is meant to be shared with an adult or proficient reader serving as a guide. A note to parents introduces the book and offers friendly advice on encouraging budding the reader and bringing out their inner jokester. 2005, Picture Window Books, Ages 4 to 7.

Gr 3 Up-Many of these jokes have childlike humor, but others will require considerable adult involvement to explain the punch lines. For example, "Why don't ants ever get sick? Because they have anty-bodies." Wide borders with wavy lines set off the text and art nicely, and the colorful, cartoon illustrations are interesting and entertaining. Best suited as read-alouds, these books will inspire children to read orally.
