Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Japanese-inspired amigurumi(literal translation: "knitted stuffed toy") is one of the latest crafting crazes, and Haden's first book puts a unique spin on amigurumi by focusing on the creepy side of crocheted creatures. The Internet is full of amigurumi patterns for crocheted animals, but this is the first time this reviewer has seen a crocheted Cthulhu. (Rendered in lime-green yarn, he's far more cute than creepy.) There are also crocheted ninjas, a Grim Reaper, Day of the Dead figures, and vampires, all lovingly rendered. Although some beginner information is provided, a basic knowledge of crochet stitches and techniques is assumed, so be prepared to recommend basic crochet books to patrons drawn in by the whimsical designs. Highly recommended.

    Really Adorable

These very unique Amigurumi patterns will have crocheters smiling while they crochet. The patterns are easy to follow in fact, most of the patterns use the same head and body patterns. Once you learn how to do one, you can do them all. I have a hard time finding these dolls creepy. They are really adorable. It does not take more than a day to complete one doll. I made the Vampire Queen and she is so cute! I had a blast adding the finishing touches. It does not require special hooks or accessories to complete the dolls. They require stuffing, felt, and embroidery floss for the most part. Polymer clay to create other accessories are optional. The only part that I had difficulty was with creating the hair. I had too many problems following her directions. I put my doll's hair on like you would do a latch hook project. I am now getting requests for more of these dolls since they are really quite irresistible. The photos alone make the book worth the price since they are so silly and cute. There is also a good variety to choose from and match them to your very own cute monsters.

Not for beginners, but has interesting project ideas

If you are looking for a book to teach you how to crochet, don't buy this book. If you are an advanced beginner to better crochet enthusiast looking for new craft projects, this is a good buy. I found the projects to be interesting and the results cute.

I give this book 4 stars overall because there are a few flaws that would make this much better.

The full-color photos are done well, but only the fronts of projects are shown--it can be difficult to figure out some of the patterns without these photos. The same goes for the "magic ring" stitch that the author uses as a project foundation--once I figured it out, it was pretty cool, but figuring it out took a long time.

The author could have saved me much confusion by writing simply that bodies are worked in spirals and heads are worked in row-based rounds (like most granny squares). I had to spend quite a bit of time on the author's website to figure that out because her instructions are not clear on this point.

There is a lot of pattern repetition--nearly everything has the same head and body configuration (only color and details are different). In addition, there are patterns for 4 types of zombies (corporate, cyber, and Day of the Dead (male and female))--creepy cute, yes, but I would have liked a wider variety of monster types, not just variations on the undead.

I'm glad I bought it and I liked the projects. However, it could have been a bit more user-friendly.

    Cute ideas, poor instructions.

The ideas in this book are cute, but the instructions are poor. I had to have someone else show me how to do the magic ring to get it started, as the book's instructions did not make sense. I've done amigurumi before, so I started with cthulhu. There are unnecessarily complex parts to his face which could be achieved using simpler methods. This over-complexity would be fine, I guess, but there would need to be added step-by-step photos to cover the more outlandish bits. There aren't, and it makes the project an exercise in frustration.

A major part of the Japanese patterns is a chart that shows how many stitches per row you should have (to make sure you're on track). This book doesn't include any, which nullifies the usefulness of the round charts that are included.

I wont return the book, but if the author does another I hope she tests it on beginners before sending it to her editor.

Cute and Creepy Critters for Halloween

A friend of mine, who knows I love to crochet, found this at the library and brought it over to show me. Creepy Cute Crochet by Christian Haden has got some of the most adorable creepy critters to make for Halloween. All of the creatures have the same basic pattern to follow for the head and body, and then there are lots of embellishments and accessories to make or add to your creation. My three favorite creatures are the skeleton bride and groom, and the corporate zombie. So, if you have a knack and/or passion for crochet, this is a great little book to add to your pattern collection.

    Tweens Loved them

My son, nieces and nephews all liked the creatures I made for them. The patterns were easy to follow and I was able to adapt them to other creatures.

    Fun crocheting book

The ideas are great; however the patterns are not the clearest I have read, but they do work and we've had good results. I would not recommend this for a beginner.
