Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, who has been trapped on a satellite since childhood with only her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker – unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing stop her marriage to Emperor Kai. *I received an advanced copy from the publishers

    -Plot & Characters

This book has surpassed my expectations. Everything falls apart so quickly – it had me shaking and hardly breathing. Each individual plot is so expertly crafted that it demands attention. The logic is clean and motives behind the characters’ actions are believable.

Cinder: the levelheaded cyborg is struggling with her identity as a Lunar and trying to master her gift in time to stop the wedding. But with the guilt of an attempted rescue gone wrong, she is catapulted into an unforeseen path that leads her to a startling realization – is she becoming a monster... like Levana? As the plot thickens, the tension is rising to new levels to prepare for the final book.

Scarlet: this perspective was few and far between. Though I love Scarlet, some moments seemed to drag but this did not take away from the overall. One of my favorite chapters takes place in this plotline. After losing her grandma, Scarlet tries to move on and maybe get somewhere with Wolf. But when everything crumbles, she has to test her bravery and determination in the faces of some scary Lunars. Scarlet’s strength is pushed to the limits in this exciting character development.

Cress: our title character is a very savvy hacker, having spent half her life in a satellite. Being there has left her naive and she knows that she is not strong like Thorne. Her story shows a side of the Union that I haven’t seen before. Her whole plot is creative, cleverly tying in the Rapunzel references while still having a sense of a new story. It adds a needed layer book. And as the stakes are raised, Cress begins to see that she is strong: in her mind, heart, and in her willingness to help. Cress’s optimistic, imaginative character brings a balance to the other girls and the story.

Kai: the Emperor of the Commonwealth is stressed, so much that he has been losing weight. He is being forced to marry Levana to protect Earth and he finds himself thinking about his inevitably short life at her side. The only consolation is that the girl he is still thinking about keeps managing to evade capture. Kai is the leader of the important plot point that drives half the characters.

Thorne: the charming and charismatic spaceship captain is back and I must say, I admire his courage and ability to put on a brave face in such adverse situations. And though he did lose my trust briefly, he regained in as soon as he gave me his reason. Existing as a juxtaposition of needing-help and help-giving, Thorne goes from more than comic-relief. He may not think he’s a hero, but I do.

Wolf: I can’t help but picture a kicked puppy. Wolf is upset by the dreadful turn of events and the way he reacts… He's sweet, but I really think that he could have held it together more. He didn’t aid the plot much.

    -Ending
What happened before the cliffhanger is what is keeping it from bothering me as much as it should, I think. I was literally hyperventilating in school. But my goodness, the squealing and the dizziness and the general freak-out was worth it!

    -Overall -- Absolutely wonderful!
    Romances: so stinkin’ awesome!
    Love Triangle: none (thank goodness!)
Characters: very fun and all unique
    Plot: stable, logical, and enthralling
    Freak-Out: major
Cliffhanger: not terrible... but I still need Winter, preferably now
    Mature Content: none

    Happy reading!

    5+ Stars

I love fairy tales. I also love SciFi. Marissa Meyer does such an excellent job in putting these two together! It is amazing to me as well that in this third book of her Lunar Chronicles series that she also handles multiple points of view and story-lines so seamlessly without losing my interest or confusing me. This is storytelling at its best!

I don't know how she comes up with the back-stories for her characters that build these amazing plots, nor how she creatively takes a beloved fairy tale (Rapunzel) and creates this amazing story. I just know that she does it well. I was immediately drawn in to Cress's world, her joys, and her fears from the first page. None of the characters in this series are perfect, and Cress is no different. I would say, however, that all the characters are perfectly flawed and I wouldn't change a thing about them. They are all consistent and I felt they react as they should if they weren't just in a storybook world. I loved Cress! She is amazing! She isn't my favorite character. I think Cinder, Scarlet, and Thorne are all vying for that place, but I still love all of these characters. I can't say that I love the villains, which are Queen Lavana and Sybil, but they are very true to who they are and what they do.

I just have to note here that I am very happy with Thorne's place in the whole plot. I felt he was meant specifically for someone and now I know that he is and I am very happy about it. :) Prince Kai redeems himself to me in this book. I loved him in Cinder, not so much in Scarlet, and I am falling back in love with him in Cress. We also meet another leading man and a new leading lady that I'm sure will be much more present in the fourth book. I'm really looking forward to it!

The plot kept me turning the pages. Meyer doesn't let her characters off easy. She is actually pretty hard on all of them. They have a serious fight they have undertaken with serious decisions to be made that have major consequences. I'm glad that it hasn't been too easy, even though it was pretty difficult in spots. I was a little worried about what would happen and I'm glad that I'm happy with the way things are going. I'm really not sure what is going to unfold in the final book. I can figure out what needs to happen and probably what will happen, but I also know that it is going to be a tough journey for Cinder and her companions.

If you enjoy reading fairy tales (or very creative twists on them), or SciFi, then I would highly recommend reading Cress! The series just seems to get better and better. If there was a higher rating than 5, this book would get that for me.

Content: Clean (there is some innuendo and violence, but I would still consider this clean)

    Another great book!

Just like Cinder and Scarlet, this book was great! I could not put this down as I was sucked in to this exhilirating story. Marissa Meyer has a true talent for telling stories and I am happy to have found this series. I found myself at times (in all three books) sitting up and holding my breath because of how intense the story was. I cannotbelieve that Ihave to wait a whole nother year to read the next book!

No doubt that this is my most anticipated read of 2014.... And I am pleased to say that it met all my expectations! This installment is action packed and was so good! I'm going to try not to ramble, but I'm not sure how easy this will be lol
The best thing about this series to me is the way its written. I love how it goes from everyone's POV (even the new characters that are introduced) and as they go along their adventures, they all meet up in the end. And this one is no different. In this story we meet Cress who has been trapped in a satellite locked away from both the Earthen and Lunar world. All the while Cinder, Scarlet, and the others are still trying to save everyone. As they take on this new adventure, which is a trek across the Sahara Desert, they all meet up in the one central location. It's genius.
Another thing I love about this series is the action. And man, this one was filled with even more action and drama than the last two. It was so much going on that a few times I had to put the book down because I just couldn't handle it. It was just really stressful ok lol But seriously, the plot twists left my mouth hanging open. I'm pretty sure that they will leave you surprised as well. And with the Lunars and the Earthens on the brink of war, I know things can only get better from here!
As for the romance, I was happy with it, but at the same time, I was a little disappointed in it as well. The love between Scarlet and Wolf is still there and I fell for them even more after what happened to Scarlet. I felt so bad for Wolf. He clearly loved her and he was so upset about it. My heart went out to him. Also, there is a new budding romance! I won't tell you who it's between because it may be a bit of a spoiler, but I was excited for it. I wanted this person to fall in love last time. I'm hoping that something actually happens.
Overall, this is my favorite one yet. With the Lunars and Earthens quickly coming to war, the wait for Winter will be hard. Speaking of Winter... She makes a small appearance and it is kind of a weird one. Be prepared......

This series is one of my Favorites! Now being said I was very excited to get the third book and its about Rupunzal and I dont know a whole lot about her so I was excited for this one. Everything happened so fast but nice fast pace from everything about to finally be good for these characters BOOM never mind cant do that yet. I hate when characters are separated but in this case it made the story that much more exciting. The way this book ended made me mad but like a good mad. If you enjoyed the frist two books you will Love this one and get ready for the finale showdown thats going to happen in Winter because everything just got more serious!! I hope this is helpful!!

I have always loved this series and I had very high expectations

I have always loved this series and I had very high expectations for Cress. I have to say that it blew those expectations out of the water! A lot of series now start off great but they lost consistency and awesomeness as the series goes on, but not the Lunar Chronicles. They just keep getting better. You won't be disappointed!!!

    more from this reviewer

This series just gets better and better! I loved this installmen

This series just gets better and better! I loved this installment and it has me dying for more!!! When I saw that the third book would be Rapunzel I was beyond excited to read it. What I love the most is that we get new fairy tale characters, but still get all of the previous ones as well. Each book just adds more awesome to the story, which also ups the intensity and more world building! The stories all intertwine fabulously and I love the direction it's heading. I will try to continue this review without totally fan girling all over the place.

Cress is the newest addition to this fantastic series, and this book focuses a lot on her. Instead of being trapped in a tower though, she is trapped in a satellite. She is a shell and is useless to the Lunar Queen, Levana. She does have a particular skill that is handy though. The ability to hack computers and help hide the ships of the Lunars going to Earth is just one of the things she is forced to do. She is also supposed to be tracking Cinder, which she is, but she will not tell them she has found her. She manages to get rescued, but things don't go as planned. She learns a lot in the short time that she has had freedom, some of it very crushing. I loved Cress. She was very smart, a little naive, but totally bad@$$. She always thought of herself as a damsel in distress, but she is very capable of holding her own. She is not afraid to fight back, or fight for what is right.

We still have the rest of the cast that we have grown to love in the previous two books, and they just get better and better too. The relationships and alliance they form with one another is great. There is doubt and trust issues of course, but it makes it more believable to me. Things don't ever go easy or as planned and it makes for some strained interactions and some scenes that are quite entertaining.

The romances are wonderful too. Yes, I say romances because now that we have added more characters, and still have the old ones there are more than one. Cress is very taken with Thorne, and although he is arrogant and a bit off-putting, he obviously has feelings for her too. I enjoyed seeing them interact with each other and thought that they were very sweet. Then there is the thoughts of Kai that Cinder has. She tries to deny her feelings for him, but of course they are there. He has them as well, but doubts them since he doesn't really know anything about her. Wolfe and Scarlet is another romance that is floating on yes or no, but it's very real. The best thing about all of them though, is they don't overshadow the main story. They are present, but what is important always comes first.

The world building in this series is amazing. There is so much going on in so many different places, but the author always makes sure to paint a clear picture for the readers. It's so easy to get drawn into the story and totally lost in the world. It's full of action, tension, adventure, violence, and awesomeness!! It's a book that even at 500+ pages, is easy to fly through. Almost impossible to put down, and leaving you needing more, this was one heck of a ride. I am practically desperate for the next book and will be counting down the many, many days until I can read it! If you are a fan of this series and haven't pre-ordered this book yet, you need to ASAP!! I have and can't wait for my copy to arrive in all its gorgeousness!!!

    Nice Job Continuing Series

I think Maissa Meyer did a nice job continuing the Lunar Chronicles. Cinder was such an explosive read, and Scarlet and Cress kept right up...I have to say, few authors can do that.
Some parts of Cress were a little weird, but they got cleared up right away. I liked that Cress didn't sit on the satellite for half the book. Bring on the Winter!
