Overview

Loosely based on Dostoevsky's classic novel, this crime thriller moves the action to the teen-filled burbs (the film stars Monica Keena from Dawson's Creek). The plot's unfolding teen angst is accurately conveyed by the accompanying indie-rock-centric soundtrack. The album includes an instrumental song apiece from ex-Pixies Frank Black and Joey Santiago. Black's "Bullet" is a frenetic country-rocker, while Santiago's "Damaged Little F**kers" is a lonely, harmonica-driven ditty. The Meat Puppets contribute a moody, bass-driven tune reminiscent of Stan Ridgway, while Modest Mouse's quirky alt rock and gentle vocals nicely contrast with the Toadies' aggressive alt metal. Other standouts include Far's spacey remake of the Pixies' "Monkey Gone to Heaven," Sleater-Kinney's bright, playful "Burn, Don't Freeze," and the distinctive guitar sounds and haunting vocals of Guided by Voices on "Learning to Hunt." The film's director, Rob Schmidt, wanted the soundtrack to convey a lonesome, suburban wasteland "from a teenage point of view," and with this edgy album, he has certainly succeeded.
