After Hudson Savage betrayed her, Dana Cardwell hoped never to lay eyes on the seductive cowboy again. Until a bunch of old bones showed up on her family ranch. Suddenly her former lover was back in her life in a big way-to investigate a decades-old crime.
Five years ago, Hud left town with a heart load of regrets. But now, as acting interim marshal, he had a job to do. And this time he wasn't walking away. Because now Dana's life was on the line-as the unsuspecting target of a killer who still walked the canyon. Hud would do whatever it took to keep Dana close. Even if it meant risking his own heart for a second chance for both of them....For a light, short (more on that later) Harlequin novel this one was actually really good. I thought the characters and situations were believable. The author definitely kept my interest with the twists and turns of the storyline and, as with all mysteries, I am constantly going through the "whodunit" scenarios in my head. I didn't get it figured out until nearly the end. Now, about that . this story couldn't have ended more abruptly!!! I find it hard to believe that any author would end a novel they had devoted time and energy to in the manner this one ended. I don't need books to end in happily-ever-after mode, but I do need the story to either be wrapped up to a logical end, or be a teaser for a sequel. This was neither! The book ended right at the climax of one of the major storylines of the book and the reader is left hanging about the outcome. I would love to get my hands on a paper copy of this book to find out if the "rest of the story" was left out of the ebook version. My rating would be A LOT higher if I didn't feel a bit cheated.

For a free book it was great reading. Went quickly and was very enjoyable. The story line was great and so were the characters. It kept me glued to my nook reading to find out who did it. I will say that it ended very abruptly. I would have liked a better final chapter for closure for it's charcters and the story. It needed one more chapter to do that. Will read more by this author.

Hudson and Dana fell in love years and years ago. Then, five years ago, he betrayed her. But that all happened before the book begins. The book begins with Hudson coming back to the Canyon in an effort to reunite with his lost love. He ends up caught up in a murder mystery which also conveniently explains his past betrayal.
The best thing about this book is the interesting murder mystery plot. The worst thing about this book is the tepid love story. Hudson and Dana's love story is in the past and we never get a chance to see why or what it is that they love about each other. The reader must just assume that they did and that they did so passionately. And that all they need to re-spark that unexplained and undescribed love is understanding - Understanding of the past, understanding of betrayal, understanding of trust. In the end, a much better murder mystery than love story.

The story was well written with a lot of twists and turns to some pretty standard characters. For a love novel it was pretty clean and the characters remained pretty true to the story. I did enjoy the read.

Predictable plot and ending, but skillfully written.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.I have always thought Harlequin books were simple romance novels that had no appeal for me. In spite of my predisposed ideas about Harlequin books, the synopsis for this story seemed interesting, so I thought I would give it a try. Well, so much for predispositions. I really liked this book and persuaded my wife to read it. Later, a friend told me that Harlequin supposedly publishes books other than pure romance novels. I would like to think that is true because I hate admitting that I read a romance novel. Whatever the case, I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a good story all the way for me. ----- Best wishes, Dave Wile.
