Overview

One of the nation's top forensic scientists, Larry Ragle has investigated countless brutal and baffling crimes during his forty-year career. Now he takes us behind the yellow police tape and into the medical examiner's laboratory for a fascinating look at his most sensational cases, revealing how cutting-edge science and medical technology were used to shed brilliant light on the criminals and their transgressions. Here is the real world of C.S.I. — where astonishingly detailed portraits of malefactors are painted with a single drop of blood, and a microscopic fiber can direct the police to even the most careful and elusive of murderers.

Each chapter starts with an actual homicide crime scene examined by the author and follows the entire investigative team as they gather and collect evidence. The book expands to reveal the secrets of many aspects of forensic science--from the fundamentals to the cutting edge--including fingerprints, ballistics, toxicology, body fluids, DNA testing, and autopsies. Original.

This is the best book I've read on CSI. There are descriptions of crime scenes followed by the details of the forensic methods used to solve them. However, other authors in this genre will either direct their efforts to writing a dry, academic reference or to pandering to an audience that requires something more 'plot-based', knowing that combining the two is extremely difficult. Mr. Ragle attempts to do both here and fails. The crime scene decriptions are too few to entertain casual readers and the scientific details are inadequate for this to be considered a reference. The author's resume is impressive and I am convinced that he has a lot to teach us. Perhaps the most important lesson he provides is that it is not the duty of the crimes scene investigator to help convict someone, but to gather and examine evidence that can be used by the court to determine guilt or innocence. All in all, I recommend this book to readers with some education and interest in the sciences. If you are looing for a 'thriller' or seeking detailed information on forensic science, then look elsewhere.

    Decent book; differentiates fact/fiction

This book is a decent primer on the science behind series, like C.S.I. (and now, C.S.I. Miami) but it's also highly critical of the show(s). True, some of the 'crime scene science' has been 'sexed up', i.e., enhanced, for television, and the writers of the popular shows, according to Mr. Ragle, have exaggerated some of the techniques and methods, they are still entertaining shows. Mr. Ragle's comments against the shows detract from the book, but do separate fact and fiction. Another book worth a look (see also below) is 'The Forensic Science Of C.S. I.) an unauthorised/unauthorized look behind the series; which gives many specifics of forensic science.
