Great addition to the urban fantasy genre
Although I love the paranormal creatures, the recent influx of vampires in pop culture has made me a little wary of untried, new authors. I basically stick with authors I know. Well I am so glad that I decided to pick this one up. I received it in the mail Saturday and couldn't put it down until I was done. Crimson Dawn was not what I was expecting. It was full of all the action, blood, and romance that a good urban fantasy/ paranormal romance should have, but there was an element to the characters I really loved. Valeria appears unapologetic in her pursuit of her ex-fiance Tristan when he turns rogue and she is assigned to track him down. She kicks butt and takes names later. But when she is with her roommate and best friend Irulan, her tough facade crumbles. Watching the relationship between Val and Irulan develop was one of the highlights of the novel. And Irulan is a wonderful character. She fills a lot of roles in Val's life; among them protector, best friend, roommate, and confidant. Irulan's character is strong enough to support her own story in my opinion. Ms. Massey used the supernatural setting of her world to combine a mixture of beings and did it wonderfully. I would recommend this book to anyone without hesitation. But more specifically fans of the urban fantasy/ paranormal romance genre who love authors like Charlaine Harris, Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison. I have discovered a new author to follow and look forward to the next installment.
